The 2014 Lowry High School fall sports night for athletes and parents will be held Wednesday, at 6 p.m. in the Lowry auditorium.

Junior high school girls basketball teams to hold open gym next week

The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh and eighth-grade girls basketball teams will be holding an open gym from Monday, Aug. 18, through Friday, Aug. 22, from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at WJHS for those interested in trying out for the team this fall.

The 2014 Winnemucca junior golf season came to an end Wednesday with the Jeff Wade memorial golf tournament, which was won by Alyssa Dendary with a round of 79. The tournament was delayed a week by poor weather.

Vera Mullins shot a low net score of 95 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Pro's Posse tournament Tuesday at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

Youngsters hone their skills at LHS girls soccer camp

Jerry Tobin Field was busy this week as young boys and girls converged on the field for a week-long camp hosted by the Lowry High School girls soccer team and new varsity coach Melanie Rasor. The goal of the camp is to help improve fundamental soccer skills. Lowry High School football team kicks off fall practice

Nearly 100 players turned out for the opening days of practice for the Lowry High School football team. The Buckaroos went through three days of heat acclimation practice that ended last Wednesday. Full contact drills began Monday, as the Buckaroos prepare for its season-opener on Thursday, Aug. 28, with a non-conference game against North Valleys in Reno. Eastern Oregon University will be practicing Thursday at Lowry High School at 1:30 p.m. before traveling to the Bay Area for its opener against Menlo.

Fajardo named to The Manning Award watch list

RENO - Senior quarterback Cody Fajardo has been named to The Manning Award watch list, which was announced lay week. The list includes 32 of the top quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2014 season.

Century Club barbecue to be held Saturday

The Winnemucca Century Club, the booster club for Lowry High School athletics, will hold its annual membership drive barbecue on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Pioneer Park.

Junior golfers, adults compete in Emelie Dillon scramble

The annual Emelie Dillon scramble was held this past weekend that featured a mix of youth golfers and adults for the event. Dillon, who is 96, helped grow the junior golf program in Winnemucca for a number of decades as was also a long time member of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club. The foursome of Cam White, Stephanie Wade, Chad Peters and Cal Peters won the tournament with a score of 58. Chris Mendoza, Andy Mendoza and Angelina Martinez were second, one shot behind the winners. Cole Erquiaga, Tristan Cassinelli, Marquette Cassinelli and Joe Dennison were third at 60.

Preseason grind -

The Lowry High School volleyball team along with the rest of the fall sports squads got their season underway at the beginning of the week in preparation for the upcoming season. The Lady Bucks will look to improve on their fourth-place finish in the Division I-A North. The roster includes just two seniors, six juniors and four sophomores. Lowry begins its season on Friday, Aug. 29 and Saturday, Aug. 30 at the North Tahoe Invitational. The Lady Bucks are scheduled to play Smith Valley, Sierra Lutheran and Hug in pool play.All photos by Tony Erquiaga, The Humboldt Sun
