After nearly a month away, the Lowry High School football team returned to Jerry Tobin this past Friday night for homecoming against Spring Creek. The Buckaroos were coming off losses to Elko and Fernley on the road and needed a win against the Spartans to remain in playoff contention. The visitors from Elko County had other ideas and ended Lowry’s playoff hops with a 26-6 win.
Lowry High School senior Ivan Lara finished seventh this past Friday afternoon at the Wells Invitational on the 3.1-mile Chimney Creek Golf Course. Lara stopped the clock at 18 minutes, 58 seconds.
The Lowry High School girls soccer team remained in postseason contention with a 1-1 tie against Churchill County on Tuesday, Oct. 11, in Fallon. The Greenwave led 1-0 at halftime, but the Lady Bucks picked up the equalizing goal in the second half a shot by Alia Novi and an assist by Britain Backus.
The McDermitt High School volleyball team split a pair of Northern 1A East matches this past weekend at home. The Lady Bulldogs beat Carlin 25-19, 25-16, 25-12 on Friday to complete the season sweep of the Railroaders. McDermitt hosted Jackpot on Saturday and lost 25-21, 25-20, 27-25 and are now 2-6 overall and 2-5 in league play. Against Jackpot, McDermitt came out on a hot streak with nine of the first 10 points of the opening set. Cierra Smart started off the run with a hit in the open floor, Breena Crutcher added a kill and Nicolette Northrup had two aces.
The Lowry High School boys soccer team picked up its second win the Northern 3A East last week with a 2-1 win over Churchill County on Wednesday, Oct. 12, on senior day in Winnemucca.
Melissa Murphy and Gail Piquet each shot a low gross score of 72 to tie for first place in the first flight of the Winnemucca ladies Golf Club Pro’s Posse tournament held Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
A year ago, the finish in the Northern 3A volleyball season was a crazy one, with everyone seemingly beating everyone and shaking up the standings. The second half of the Northern 3A schedule began last week and the league might be in for the same kind of finish in 2022. Lowry High School traveled to Fallon on Tuesday, Oct. 11, to take on Churchill County, who came into the match winless in the Northern 3A East at 0-5. The Lady Bucks already beat the Greenwave earlier in the year in four sets.
Lowry High School sophomore Katie Cassinelli earned Northern 3A first-team honors, as the regular season of the girls golf season came to and end last week in Lake Tahoe. Freshman teammate Lainey Novacek was named to the second team. Cassinelli and Novacek competed at the NIAA 3A State Championships that were held Monday and Tuesday at Genoa Lakes Golf Club. Results were not available at press time.
It was a rollercoaster of a week for the Lowry High School volleyball team. The Lady Bucks experienced the lows and highs of the sport in a matter of a couple of days.
The Lowry High School football team dropped its second game in the Northern 3A East after a road trip to Fernley this past Friday. The Vaqueros scored two quick touchdowns on their way to a 41-14 win over the Buckaroos. Lowry dropped to 1-2 in the Northern 3A East at 5-2 overall. Turnovers plagued Lowry in the early going, fumbling the opening kickoff of the contest. The Vaqueros quickly turned it into seven points with a 29-yard touchdown run.
After getting off to a slow start against Spring Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 4, the Lowry High School girls soccer team rallied in the second half for a much needed 4-1 victory in the Northern 3A East.

The McDermitt High School volleyball team was back in action this past weekend with a pair of Northern 1A East matches. The Lady Bulldogs made the long trip to Eureka on Friday to finish the season series with the Vandals and lost in three sets 25-12, 25-22 and 25-9. McDermitt made the quick turnaround on Saturday afternoon and hosted Wells.

Lowry High School senior Ivan Lara turned in a sixth-place finish this past Friday on the 3.1-mile trek at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course, as the Buckaroos held their annual invitational. Lara stopped the clock at 17 minutes, 41 seconds, a personal best for him. Spring Creek had seven of the top-10 finishers including the top two spots with Joel Herman winning at 16:15 and Nathan Thomas (16:37) placing second.
