LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The spring 2012 season got off to an excellent start for the New Mexico State University men's and women's rodeo teams.
The Lowry High School boys basketball team won its first state championship in 10 years and 11th overall with a 52-48 win over Elko on Saturday afternoon at Lawlor Events Center in Reno. The Buckaroos brought a large contingent with its student body, cheerleaders, dance team and band, as well as a large group of fans from Winnemucca over the two days.
TUCUMCARI, N.M. - The Mesalands Community College Rodeo Team had one of their best performances at a regional rodeo at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz., on Feb. 4 - 5.
WINNEMUCCA - Lowry High School's Julia Dufurrena was named the Ruby Mountain Player of the Year by the league's coaches at the end of the regular season.
WINNEMUCCA - Lowry High School's Julia Dufurrena was named the 3A Player of the Year by the league's coaches during the state basketball championships at the end of February.Dufurrena, a senior, averaged 16.9 points and 10.5 rebounds a game to lead the Lady Buckaroos. Lowry finished the year at 17-6 but for a second consecutive season missed out on the playoffs.
WINNEMUCCA - The McDermitt High School boys basketball team was rewarded for its season, as Justin Fettic was named the Eastern 1A Player of the Year.
WINNEMUCCA - The McDermitt High School girls basketball team had Staheli Wilkinson and Debra McKee named to the first- team, all-league squad in the Eastern 1A as voted on by the league's coaches.
RENO - The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, the non-profit governing body of high school athletics in the Silver State, inducted eight northern Nevadans into this year's Hall of Fame on Friday, Feb. 23, including Humboldt County and Lowry High graduates Jim de Arrieta and Vince Mendiola.
WINNEMUCCA - The spring sports season for Lowry High School is set to get underway this weekend around northern Nevada.The Buckaroo baseball teams will be in Reno for a three-day tournament starting on Thursday.
WINNEMUCCA - Losers continues to hold the top spot in the Winnemucca Pool League standings after receiving one of the two buys in week 20. Losers has a 17-1 record and 214 out of a possible 306 points through 20 weeks of play.
WINNEMUCCA - After dropping its first match of the year to Fallon on the road, the Winnemucca Junior High School seventh-grade volleyball team was looking to return the favor in its home debut on Tuesday afternoon.
WINNEMUCCA - Playing on its home floor for the first time this season, the Winnemucca Junior High School eighth-grade volleyball team turned out a 25-19, 25-23 and 25-23 win over Fallon on Tuesday afternoon.
Basketball has come to an end for the Rural Schools this year, but the kids had a lot of fun along their journey this season. The Division 1 championship game was between McDermitt and Paradise Valley. McDermitt took first place with a score of 41-21. The MVPs from each team were Tanner Coble from McDermitt, Va Draunidalo from Orovada, Lane Johnson from Denio and Zeda Sandavol from Paradise Valley.
WINNEMUCCA - With the ground frozen and snow still on parts of Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Thursday, the Lowry High School boys golf team started its season where it left off the past three years, beating Elko in a preseason Icebreaker.
RENO - It was a tough start to the season for the Lowry High School varsity baseball team at the Mike Bearman Memorial Tournament, but the Buckaroos showed flashes of the team they can be in the finale over the three days.
