The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh and eighth-grade boys basketball teams have started their season, with games beginning this weekend.
A season ago, the Chicago Cubs played with my emotions and reached the National League Championship series. It was a big thud after that as the New York Mets swept the Cubs. I guess it was OK since no one though Chicago would be there. Now, the experts in Las Vegas have the Cubs as the favorite to win it all.

The Lowry High School boys soccer team concluded its season last Thursday with a 5-0 loss to Sparks. The Railroaders were the regular season champions in the Northern 3A (A Division). The Buckaroos ended the year at 2-14 in league play.
The Lowry High School freshmen and junior varsity volleyball teams concluded their seasons this week at home. The Lady Bucks hosted Truckee on Thursday night and both team were defeated by the Wolverines. In the season finale on Friday, the Lowry freshmen cruised to a 25-11 and 25-9 win over Sparks. The junior varsity squad had an easy time as well, beating Sparks 25-11 and 25-19.
Lowry High School sophomores Becca Kuskie and Will Kracaw qualified for the NIAA 3A State Cross Country Championships to be held Saturday at Craig Ranch Regional Park in Las Vegas.

The Lowry High School volleyball team completed its final regular season road trip of the year, with a four-set victory against rival Elko. The Lady Bucks won the first set 25-22, but dropped the second set by the same score. Lowry bounced back to win the final two sets 25-15 and 26-24 to secure the fifth seed for the Northern 3A Regional Championships. “I thought we played well,” said LHS coach Brandon Eastman. “We got out to good starts in each of the sets. Elko came back on us, but we were just that step above them and a little better. We went in there and did what we needed to do. A win is a win at this point in the season.” The Lady Bucks raced out to an 11-5 lead in the opening set, but saw that advantage disappear when the Indians went on a 7-0 run to go in front 12-11. The two teams traded points from there, as Lowry made a late run to capture the first set by three points.
FALLON — With 3 seconds left, the Lowry football team was determined to not end the season with a shutout loss. Having difficulties converting in the red zone, the Buckaroos came through at the end to prevent being shutout as Fallon won the 3A Northern battle, 35-8, Friday night at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.
Before heading to Sparks on Friday, for the Northern 3A Regional Championships at Shadow Mountain Sports Complex, a handful of Lowry cross country runners were in Spring Creek last Thursday for the Northeastern Nevada JV Championships.
Usually the final home game of the season is set to celebrate the seniors that are playing their final contest in front of friends and family. However, there are no seniors on the McDermitt High School football roster this fall.
