Buckaroos take two of three from Vaqueros, keep playoff hopes alive

Fernley came to town for a 3A North Division series against the Lowry High School baseball team and left town with one win and a couple of losses.  Lowry lost a 3-2 heartbreaker on Friday, but came back strong on Saturday with two wins to go to 3-7 in league play and keep its playoff hopes alive.  “We played well enough to win, but some mental mistakes on the bases cost us," said LHS coach Andy Harmon of the loss on Friday. "In a close game you can’t afford to make mistakes, and we made two base-running mistakes that really hurt.” Lowry took the lead early on Friday when they scored in the first inning.

Bulldog track team provides strong outing in Lovelock

The McDermitt High School track and field team went to Lovelock for the Pershing County Invitational last Saturday and emerged with two second-place finishes and two third-place finishes against their other competition.

Junior varsity Buckaroos hit the track at Lovelock

Last Saturday the Lowry High School JV track and field team traveled to Pershing County High School to participate in the Pershing County Invitational against 1A – 3A Division schools. “They have a brand new facility with a new track that looked really good," said LHS coach Grant Beatty. "But it rained the entire time that we were there. We ended up leaving a little bit early before the end of the meet because the conditions were so bad.” Freshman Cody Tolbert grabbed a piece of a three-way tie for second place in the pole vault with a personal-record  leap of 6 feet, 6 inches on his way to being the only Buckaroo medalist of the meet

Lowry varsity track holds their own in Fallon

Last Saturday the varsity Lowry High School track and field squad attended the Fallon Elks meet and only scored one win, but numerous medals and personal records were set. Jasper Glasgow won his second consecutive shot put title with a toss of 42 feet, 1.75 inches, and he also placed ninth in the discus (106-7). “Jasper won the shot put by one-half inch,” LHS track and field coach Grant Beatty said. “It was really close; it came down to the wire.”  Brandon Lee ran to a second-place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 15.76 seconds, and Scottie Smith (5 feet, 8 inches) got silver in the high jump.

Taua elevated to running backs coach for the Wolf Pack

One of the best to ever play running back at Nevada has been elevated to coaching the position for the Wolf Pack.  Vai Taua, a three-time all-conference running back during his illustrious playing career (2007-10) for the Wolf Pack, has been on the Nevada staff for the past two seasons, first as a special teams analyst and most recently as the assistant director of player personnel and recruiting.  “We’re excited for Vai to move into this role on our coaching staff,” Norvell said. “This is a great opportunity for him, and it’s an opportunity that he has earned.”

Vaqueros, Wolverines take out Buckaroo swimmers

The women could not field a team for the trip to Truckee last Saturday, but the Lowry High School men took four swimmers and they brought home a couple of wins and numerous other medal finishes for their efforts. Hunter Lewis won the 100 meters freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 0.36 seconds, and he took second in the 50 meters freestyle in 27 seconds.  Lewis teamed up with Aidan Maher, Tristan Miller, and Evan Jeppsen for a silver medal in the 200 meters medley relay (2:08.55) and the 200 meters relay (1:53.86).

Lowry finishes second on home course, fourth in Fernley

The Lowry High School boys golf team got the opportunity to play a 3A North league match at the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Monday. The Buckaroos took full advantage, shooting a team score of 352 to finish second.  Truckee continued its winning ways, shooting 324 to win the tournament..   South Tahoe (355), Elko (370), Fernley (376), Spring Creek (425), and Fallon (484) all posted team scores, while Dayton, Sparks and North Valleys had individual golfers only. 

Lady Bucks win by mercy rule again at North Valleys

The Lowry High School softball team traveled to North Valleys last weekend and took their third straight win by 10 runs or more to go to 3-0 in league play.  “The girls played well,” said LHS coach Austin Mayo. “They jumped on it offensively out of the gate and kept it up. “Mackenzie (Salas-Begay) pitched well enough without her best stuff and only gave up one earned run and three runs total.”

Trout says he is an Angel for life

Mike Trout smiled into the postcard-perfect Orange County sunlight and said exactly what every Los Angeles Angels fan has spent years hoping to hear. "I know there was a lot of talk about going back East, but I enjoy every minute being here," Trout said Sunday. "This is my home. I love it. I think the direction of the franchise, if it was going the other way, I would have had to consider going. But it never crossed my mind. I was going to be an Angel for life, sure."

Buckaroos edged out and then snowed out in Reno

The Lowry High School baseball team went to North Valleys last weekend to take on the Panthers and battled to a 10-9 loss on Friday.  Snow took over on Saturday and postponed play of the other games until further notice. 

Round one of I-80 Challenge Motocross held in Winnemucca

More than 500 riders came to Winnemucca to compete in the I-80 Challenge at the Winnemucca Regional Raceway on Jungo Road last weekend.  Over 50 riders came from California, from an event that was rained out, to participate in this local event.  Thirty-one different classes competed at the event, including 50 cc beginners to 50 plus Veterans.  Cheri Duncan was working the office for the event.

The partially tax-funded stadium that will become the home of the Oakland Raiders in Las Vegas in 2020 has recently faced delays with the delivery of steel components

Winnemucca Warriors win three in Reno

The Fifth Annual Reno Classic Basketball Tournament put on by Hardwood Palace saw the Winnemucca Warriors win all three of their games in the eighth-grade boys bracket Championship. The Warriors took down the Reno Kings 49-30. 

Loopy Leprechaun softball tournament raises money for charity

The Winnemucca Sports Complex was the home of the Loopy Leprechaun Softball Tournament last weekend. The tournament raised $3,937 for Suicide Prevention, the Frontier Community Action Agency, and Humboldt Hope Connection. Eleven co-ed teams played games on Saturday and Sunday with a variety of twists and turns in an attempt to have fun and help out the community.  Julio Martin, was the co-director of the Loopy Leprechauns

Nevada well represented on MW coaches teams

The University of Nevada men’s basketball team was well represented on the 2019 Mountain West coaches teams. Jordan Caroline, Caleb Martin, Cody Martin and Jazz Johnson earned honors on Monday from the MW media and the same four have garnered recognition from the conference coaches today.
