Coming off three straight road wins over Northern 3A West opponents, the Lowry High School volleyball team returned to its home floor this past weekend to begin Northern 3A East play against Spring Creek and Elko. The Lady Bucks came up short in both matches, losing 33-31, 25-9, 25-23 to the Spartans on Friday night at 25-23, 25-8, 25-19 to the Indians on Saturday afternoon to fall to 0-2 in league play.
After opening the season at home in mid-August, the Lowry High School football team have been road warriors ever since. With a bye week thrown in, the Buckaroos completed a three-game road trip at Spring Creek on Friday night. The two rivals provided fireworks and the scoreboard operator busy with a combined 88 points.
It was a busy three days for the McDermitt High School volleyball team, who improved to 4-1 in the 1A East with two wins in three matches.
It was a tough weekend for the Battle Mountain High School volleyball team, as they hit the road for the first time in September after hosting four straight Northern 2A matches. Battle Mountain was in Lovelock on Friday night to take on league-leading Pershing County. Even though each of the three sets were close, the Mustangs won 25-18, 25-19, 25-22.
The Elko/Pershing County girls soccer game got rained out last Tuesday because of thunder and lightning in Elko. However, the Mustangs stormed Battle Mountain on Saturday. Lovelock beat their rival school 12-0. "We were excited to play them because we did not get to play them last year," coach Kelly Brooks said.
Last week, the Pershing County High School volleyball swept Battle Mountain 25-18, 25-19, 25-22 and West Wendover 26-24, 25-16, 25-16, bringing the Mustangs’ Northern 2A record to 9-0. Pershing County played the first of two homecoming week games against Oasis Academy on Wednesday. Results were not available at press time.

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made its second stop of the fall season in Ely on Sept. 7-8 for the White Pine rodeo. Humboldt County’s Brynn Barto led the way in the barrel racing average with a time of 34.933 seconds. She won the first performance at 17.339 and was the runner-up in the second performance.
What do you do when you have to play your next four matches on field turf? If you are the Lowry High School girls soccer team, you find the one of the few places in Winnemucca that has field turf. The Lady Bucks practiced in the high school courtyard to get ready for their Lyon County road trip.
The Lowry High School boys soccer team remained in the hunt for a playoff berth in the Northern 3A with a win and tie at home this past weekend. Lowry beat Dayton 1-0 on Thursday and played to a scoreless tie against Fernley on Saturday.
The Battle Mountain High School football team dropped a 28-6 decision to Dayton on Friday night at Tim Knight Field in Battle Mountain.
The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team came away with a split of two Northern 2A matches this past weekend at home and sit at 4-3 in league play. “The matches were fought hard this weekend as we tried out a new rotation as we are nearing the down slide of our season,” said BMHS coach Julia Ramirez. “We are working at utilizing more hitters on the net.”
Last week, the Pershing County High School soccer team tied the visiting Fernley Vaqueros and beat the Whittell Warriors on the road. The Mustangs now have a 3-5-1 record overall and a 2-5-1 league record.
The Mustang volleyball team defended their undefeated status in two league games last week. On Wednesday, they beat the visiting Yerington Lions in four sets (25-22, 17-25, 25-17, 25-13). Saturday, they traveled to Tahoe City and trounced the Lakers in five sets (27-25, 25-21, 25-27, 20-25, 15-9). To make the Mustang win even better, the North Tahoe Lakers are the defending State champions.
The Lowry High School girls soccer team remained in the hunt for the top spot in the Northern 3A East with three wins in four matches. Lowry scored a combined 20 goals in a 13-0 win over West Wendover on Aug. 30 and a 7-0 victory over White the following day.
