It was a mixed bag of results for the Lowry High School girls basketball team, who faced a pair of Northern 3A West schools in crossover play. The games do not count for the league standings. Lowry started red hot against South Tahoe on Friday night in Winnemucca, leading by as many as 17 points in the opening quarter, eventually winning 54-39. It was a quick turnaround, as Lowry boarded the bus on Saturday morning to for Reno play North Valleys.
If there is anything we have learned in the first two weeks of the season, the Lowry High School boys basketball team is going to be a fun group to watch. With new coach Brandon Eastman and long-time assistant Dave Schwartz helping, the Buckaroos have shown new excitement on the floor, after struggling the past few years to find a cohesive unit. That was no different last week, as Lowry took on three Northern 3A West opponents.
With eight freshmen and sophomores on the squad, the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team have caught fire with seven straight wins to begin the season. The Lady Longhorns went on the road this past weekend and beat Pershing County 39-29 and Coral Academy Science 42-17 to move to 2-0 in the Northern 2A.
Perhaps tougher than thought to be, the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team opened Northern 2A action with road wins at Pershing County and Coral Academy Science. The Longhorns shot just 22% from the 3-point line on Friday against the Mustangs, as Pershing County stayed within striking distance the entire night. Battle Mountain eventually held on for a 54-50 victory.
The Lowry High School wrestling team found itself back atop the standings of its own Cody Louk Invitational on the strength of seven wrestlers in the finals. Pete Bengochea at 113 pounds, Kruz Gomez (126), Randy Patterson (175) and Jhett Harber (190) captured individual titles for the Buckaroos. Edward Jones (106), Erick Valencia (165) and Logan Jonas (285) each finished second.

The Pershing County High School girls basketball team started their week by beating Coral Academy of Science 46-13 in Reno. Last Friday. the Mustangs played their first home game of the year this past Friday night and lost 39-29 to Battle Mountain. On Saturday, Pershing County collected a 35-25 win against the visiting West Wendover Wolverines.
Last weekend, the Pershing County High School wrestling team competed at Cody Louk, McQueen JV and Nevada Queens tournaments. "We sent kids to three different events and positives and success were everywhere," said coach Mike Brooks. At the Cody Louk in Winnemucca, the Mustangs finished eighth out of 28 teams, no small feat considering they sent only six wrestlers: Jeff Elerick (144), Angelo Gibson (157), Israel Knight (150), Wyatt Hughes (175), Jake Trowbridge (190) and Justin Carruth (132).

On Tuesday Nov. 26, Pershing County High School hosted its annual fall sports awards night in the high school auditorium. The JV and varsity football and volleyball teams attended. The PCHS girls soccer team treated its athletes to a dessert buffet earlier in the month in the middle school cafeteria.

College football was dominated by flags on Saturday. Not the ones thrown by officials — the ones planted by players in the middle of the field. Michigan, North Carolina State and Florida celebrated road wins by displaying flags on the logos in the middle of their rivals’ stadiums. Arizona State put its own twist on the day with a trident.
Not surprisingly, there were plenty of football awards to go around on fall sports awards night in the revamped Pershing County High School auditorium Tuesday, Nov. 26. The football team displayed the state trophy they won by beating Incline 26-6 in the NIAA 2A state championship game at McQueen High School in Reno. Their video expert Landon Smith, a senior, placed hand beaded lanyards around each coach's neck.
There was a ton of hardware and success on Pat Hart Court on Saturday afternoon, as the three-time reigning 3A state champion, Lowry Buckaroos hit the floor for the first time this season. On the other side, Pyramid Lake made the trip to Winnemucca for the second time in three years.
