Battle Mountain Little League held its opening ceremonies this past Saturday to kick of the 2023 season.  

Hinkey wins discus at Laker Invitational

The McDermitt High School track and field team made its way to Pyramid Lake last Thursday for the Laker Invitational. Sophomore Kess Hinkey won the boys discus with a toss of 104 feet, 5 inches. He added a third-place outing in the shot put with throw of 35-5. AJ Farmer placed 10th in the shot put at 27-11 and was 13th in the discus with a throw of 63-7.

Battle Mountain Junior High wrestlers compete in Tah-Neva Championships

The Battle Mountain High School junior high wrestling team was in Lovelock at Pershing County High School on Saturday, March 25, for the Tah-Neva Championships. In the eighth-grade division, Lance Stewart at 70 pounds and Levi Baker (145) won individual titles for Battle Mountain. Stewart cruised in his first two matches with pins over Ryder Segura of Oasis Academy and Kael Sisley of Winnemucca. Stewart beat teammate Grady Tolbert for the 70-pound title. 

Winnemucca Junior High wrestlers sweep Tah-Neva titles

The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh and eighth-grade wrestling teams swept the titles at the Tah-Neva Championships at Pershing County High School in Lovelock on Saturday, March 25. The seventh-grade squad ran away with the title with 212 points, while White Pine (143) and Battle Mountain (116.5) were second and third, respectively.

BMHS softball improves to 7-1

The Battle Mountain High School softball team continues to cruise the Northern 3A, picking up three more wins over Incline last week at Golden Eagle Park in Sparks.

Eight PCHS athletes compete in Fernley

The PCHS track team braved the cold in Fernley this past weekend. Hayley Montes, Yasmin Acosta, Luis Sanchez, Ramon Sanchez, Josiah Hunt, Izayuh McGlothin, Denzel Zaldivar and Ashton Jimenez competed against athletes from over 17 other schools. "Overall, our track stars placed fourth or better in six events. They're right there and working hard to break into the top three at these big track meets," coach Matt Fuller said.

BMHS track and field team competes at Smitty Classic

The Battle Mountain High School track and fields team was in Reno on Saturday, March 18, for the Smitty Track and Field Classic at Wooster High School.

BMHS baseball extends win streak to six

The Battle Mountain High School baseball team spent the end of last week at Golden Eagle Park in Sparks and picked up three wins over Incline to extend its winning streak to six games and move to 6-4 overall. The Longhorns beat the Highlanders 5-2 on Thursday and swept a doubleheader on Friday 10-2 and 16-9.

Lowry drops road game to Truckee, South Tahoe match-up postponed

The Lowry High School baseball team was one of the few teams that was able to play this past weekend. Despite some delays on Friday morning, the Buckaroos were able to get to Sparks and play Truckee in a 3A crossover match-up. The Wolverines, a perennial power in the 3, picked up a 12-1 win over the Buckaroos, as Lowry dropped to 3-6-1 overall and 2-3 in crossover play with the Northern 3A West.

The last time the Lowry High School swim team was in action was at the Aqua 5 in Carson City on March 11.

Humboldt County/Battle Mountain clubs win at Fallon High School rodeo

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association was back in action in Fallon on March 11-12 and a number of local cowboys and cowgirls performed well. Humboldt County’s Brynn Barto took home the top spot in the barrel racing average with a time of 33.617.  She captured both performances with time of 17.018 and 16.599.

Weather, road closures force teams to cancel events

The snowy weather that hit Humboldt County late Thursday night and Friday morning created a numerous of accidents and the closure of Interstate 80 westbound for a number of hours.

PCHS stretches winning streak to seven

Things are looking up for the Pershing County High School baseball team. For the first time since 2017, they've chalked up more than four wins in a season.  Last Tuesday (March 21), they beat Silver Stage 11-9 at home. 

Lady Mustangs move to 5-0 in league

It was a big week for the Pershing County High School softball team.  On Tuesday, March 21, the Mustangs hosted Silver Stage, beating them 20-9. This past Friday, they hosted Mineral County for a doubleheader. Once again, the Mustangs came out on top (18-2, 16-1). 

Pershing County baseball hosts Incline for doubleheader

Pershing County High School baseball coach Jared Jensen called it "an overall great group performance."  Pershing County hosted the Incline Highlanders for a doubleheader this past Saturday.  The Mustangs racked up two league wins (12-7, 12-8). It was the first time in six years they beat the Highlanders.
