The Winnemucca Junior All-Stars went a perfect 3-0 last week at the District 3 Tournament in Elko.
Lowry High School sophomore Txema Bengochea was named to Northern 3A East second team at shortstop and an honorable mention choice in the Northern 3A for his play this year. In 25 games this season, Bengochea hit .279, with 19 hits, 12 runs scored, three RBI and a double.

One way the PCHS wrestling program makes the most of its off-season is through summer wrestling camps. Coach Mike Brooks says they give the wrestlers experiences to improve their skills.
A pair of Lowry High School senior finished out their softball career by being named to the Northern 3A all-league first team and 3A all-state team. Savannah Stoker, who set the all-time Nevada home run record with 53 and finished third on the all-time RBI list with 214 was named the Northern 3A East Player of the Year.
The Lovelock Softball Association (LSA) launched its seventh season on Thursday, June 6. Eight teams each paid $250 to support the summertime attraction at McDougal Park.
The Glenn Wasson Memorial basketball tournament and fundraiser is older than some of the players at last weekend's games. Jesse Canchola (Class of 2002) remembers Wasson well and fondly. He wants his legacy to live on. In 2002, Wasson assisted coach Lance Condie when the Mustangs won the league championship and were state runners up.
The Battle Mountain 8-10-year-old all-star softball team is in Elko for the District 3 Tournament at Newton Field. White Pine and Fernley open play on Thursday at 8 a.m. and Battle Mountain takes on host Elko at 10 a.m.
Lowry High School had 19 student/athletes travel to Reno on May 30-31 for the 34th annual Northern Nevada weight competition at McQueen High School. The athletes competed in the squat, bench and power clean.

The long season for junior high school cowboys and cowgirls has hit its national finals, which begins Sunday at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa. Five Humboldt County cowboys and cowgirls will compete, as well as a pair of Battle Mountain Rodeo Club members.
On June 1, Tim Jackson officially took over one of the tougher jobs in Nevada as the NIAA’s newest executive director. Jackson, who becomes the sixth executive director in the organization’s history, replaced Donnie Nelson. Nelson was with the NIIAA for nearly 25 years and the last 2.5 as the executive director. Jackson has served as Clark County School District director of athletics is originally from Sandusky, Ohio and graduated from Bowling Green State University.
There’s no stopping the annual Mustang 5K. Besides being a major fundraiser for the PCHS football program, it’s a harbinger of summer. On Friday evening, 64 runners and walkers took off from Joe Yanni Field and wound their way through Lovelock streets.
RENO — Nevada soccer officially has its Mountain West matchups for the 2024 season. Nevada will play six home matches at Mackay Stadium in conference play starting Oct. 3, including defending Mountain West champions Utah State in the home finale Oct. 27.
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, the non-profit governing body of high school sports in the Silver State, is inducting 14 Northern Nevadans to its Hall of Fame on Thursday. According to the NIAA, the 30th class have secured for themselves a special place in the history of Nevada high school athletics by the sheer magnitude of their contributions.
