The Winnemucca Junior High School girls basketball team will hold a few more open gyms for the upcoming season.
RENO — The Nevada Basketball program and head coach Steve Alford announced the addition of Yuto Yamanouchi-Williams, a 6-foot-10, 230-pound forward who spent last season playing for Portland.
Temperatures are still over 100 degrees and the new school year does not start for more than a week but high school teams are on the field or the court for the fall season.
Last week’s two-day volleyball camp at PCHS exceeded expectations. Jim and Anna Aiazzi from Yerington ran the camp by invitation of coach Monica Halverson.
Earlier this summer, dozens of Mustang athletes set workout goals. As the season draws to a close, many have completed the program. Not for the first time, coach Mike Brooks designed a T-shirt to mark their efforts. It’s an eye-catching design. A muscular horse in Mustang garb and gym shoes grips a barbell and prepares to lift it from the ground.
Maddux Nichols carded a 7-over par 79 to win the Jeff Wade Memorial junior golf tournament, held Wednesday July 31, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

LAS VEGAS — Oakland Athletics executive Sandy Dean told the Las Vegas Stadium Authority that the club does not expect to spend the entire $380 million in public money allocated to build a new stadium in Las Vegas. Dean said the A’s plan to spend $350 million of those funds, leaving $30 million on the table. He also told the authority that the club plans to finance $300 million of the stadium cost, but no lenders have been secured.
The quarter mile dirt track on Seven Troughs Road will see lots of action over Frontier Days Weekend. Lovelock Speedway will host races this Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m.
Lovelock's horseshoe players have exciting competitions ahead of them this summer but they can't be two places at once. The Frontier Days Horseshoe Tournament takes place at McDougal Park on Aug. 3-4.

The Battle Mountain NNA swim team was recently in Reno for the Silver State Championships, a home meet for the club that is based out of Reno. Temperatures rose to 105 degrees but high winds and lightning played havoc with the championships All of the preliminary races were held but just one final was completed and prelim times carried over to the finals.
Katie Cassinelli carded a round of 85 to win the Doug Maddox Memorial junior golf tournament held Wednesday, July 16, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
