'Eye of the Colt' to be inserted in Review-Miner

LOVELOCK - "Eye of the Colt," a newsletter from the Pershing County Middle School Publications class, will be inserted in the Lovelock Review-Miner beginning in this edition and continuing throughout the school year.

Imlay recognizes community service Auxiliary presents awards of appreciation

IMLAY - The Imlay Auxiliary held its Service Appreciation Ceremony on Dec. 10. The annual event has been held for six years, Imlay Auxiliary Secretary Terry Sherbinow said."It's our way of saying thank you to those who help out our community," Sherbinow said.

Local resident wins 'Lovelock Loot' in chamber promotion

LOVELOCK - Nikki Talcott won the Shop Local for the Holidays promotion sponsored by the Lovelock/Pershing Chamber of Commerce. Talcott's name was picked from hundreds of entries on Dec. 19 in the chamber office by EP Minerals Site Operations Manager Corey Hartwig and chamber President Jennifer Hill. Talcott won $250 in Lovelock Loot.

Pershing County 4-H Awards announced

LOVELOCK - The annual 4-H Awards and Recognition program and potluck dinner was held Nov. 10 at the Pershing County Community Center. Maggie Gallagher and Kalynne Mitchell served as Mistresses of Ceremony. The program recognizes the achievements of the youth and shows appreciation to the leaders and all the people in the community who made the 4-H program the success that it is.

Nutritional properties of windrowed and standing basin wildrye

LOVELOCK -This past week I received a call from a rancher near Austin who was looking for an economical, high-producing forage that could be used as a winter forage in his beef cattle production system. Although there are many alternative forages and small grains that can be rotated with alfalfa, or used in pastures such as: Teff, Wheat, Barley and traditional grass hays. A forage that is sometimes over looked, but common to Nevada and the Intermountain West is Basin wildrye (Elymus cinereus).

LOVELOCK - How many of you remember a few years ago about research conducted by the UN Food and Agricultural Organization that claimed livestock was responsible for over 18 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions? This percentage was greater than gases produced by automobiles and other modes of transportation. How many of you have heard of the "Meatless Monday" campaign? This campaign encourages eliminating meat from your diet one day a week to "reduce your carbon footprint." The Meatless Monday campaign goes on to say, "The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization estimates the meat industry generates nearly one-fifth of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions that are accelerating climate change worldwide."
