New directors appointed for Nevada Office of Veterans Services

RENO - With the announcement of Caleb Cage joining Gov. Brian Sandoval's office, the governor appointed new directors for the Nevada Office of Veterans Services.

NOVS ROVER program opens September with visit to Lovelock

RENO - The Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS) Veterans Outreach "ROVER" Program will visit Winnemucca and Pershing Community Center so veterans and family members will be able to meet with a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) to learn about benefits and services they may be eligible for but unaware of.

Company develops alfalfa product as an alternative to smokeless tobacco

For those of you that enjoy smokeless tobacco (snuff) but would like to quit the habit, a former Vo-Ag teacher in Montana has developed an alternative to smokeless tobacco after being diagnosed with oral cancer.

University's annual Field Day shows off ag, biotech, biofuels, 4-H programs

Public invited to event Sept. 14 at the Main Station Field Lab

RENO - The public is invited to visit the University of Nevada, Reno's Main Station Field Lab for their annual Field Day to view alternative crop projects, learn about biofuels and livestock production, taste experimental wines, visit Wolf Pack Meats and learn about the many outreach programs such as Herds to Harvest, Master Gardener and Living with Fire.

Nevada's small businesses showing improvement in economic recovery

CARSON CITY - Since bottoming out in 2010, employment in Nevada's small businesses has increased by 27,300 and has risen for nine consecutive quarters, showing indication that small businesses are on the mend and contributing to the overall improvement in the jobs outlook, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

RENO - The Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence (NNADV) has a newly designed website that is user-friendly and offers a broad spectrum of resources for survivors, service providers, media, and the general public who wish to learn more about relationship abuse.

Nevada Cattlemen's Association seeking nominations for Teacher of the Year

The deadline to apply is Oct. 10

ELKO - The Nevada Cattlemen's Association has started its 11th annual quest for "Teacher Of The Year" candidates. The association is asking for the public's help in soliciting nominations from school principals and fellow teachers. The deadline for submitting nominations is Oct. 10.

PUC promotes Lifeline Awareness Week Sept. 9-15

CARSON CITY - The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada is promoting Lifeline Awareness Week, Sept. 9-15. Lifeline is a government benefit program supported by the Universal Service Fund that provides a discount on phone service for qualifying low-income consumers.

UNR medical school sets free September clinic dates

Clinics serve area's medically uninsured population

RENO - The University of Nevada School of Medicine's free Student Outreach Clinics for September are scheduled for the following dates: A general clinic will be held on Sept. 14 from 8 a.m. to noon; a women's clinic will be held on Sep. 21 from 8 a.m. to noon; and a children's clinic will be held on Sept. 24 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Tobin plans to retire from senior center after five years as director

She intends to stay busy until she leaves in January

LOVELOCK - Pershing County Senior Center Director Barbara Tobin has officially announced her retirement effective Jan. 1, 2014.

He's been performing at rodeos for 32 years

LOVELOCK - Rodeo reflects the real life skills used by today's cowboys and the cowboys of yesteryear. The rodeos, or cowboy competitions, as they were called in the 1800s and early 1900, mostly appealed to local cowboys and ranchers as a way to show of their ranch-bred skills in town.

The seniors will meet again at the end of the school year to watch the sunset. This photo does not show the full class. There are 44 seniors in the Class of 2014. Lake Tahoe Dam marks 100th, Tahoe City turns 150

TAHOE CITY, Calif. (AP) - The first dam built to control the flow of the Truckee River as it tumbles down the Sierra Nevada out of Lake Tahoe has turned 100 years old.
