Pershing County 4-H youth win awards for 2012

LOVELOCK - The annual 4-H awards and recognition program and potluck dinner were held Nov. 14 at the Pershing County Community Center. Anna Vidales Gallagher and Mikayla Renfroe served as Mistresses of Ceremony. The program recognizes the achievements of the youth and shows appreciation to the leaders and all the people in the community who made the 4-H program the success that it is.

34th Annual Friends Community Christmas Fair Dec. 1

LOVELOCK - The Community Christmas Fair sponsored by the Friends of the Library will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Community Center, 820 6th St., Lovelock. The Fair will be open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. A wide variety of items can be found at the fair for gift-giving and the home. For the weary shopper massages are available.

LOVELOCK - The Lovelock Correctional Center held its quarterly blood drive in honor of Louie Gutierrez, a 2-year-old Lovelock resident diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in August.

Senior Center Cookie Contest

LOVELOCK - The Pershing County Senior Center had 19 entries in the Cookie Bake- Off. The contest was held Dec. 1 in the foyer of Valley Plaza, which houses A Little Something variety shop and Temptations ice cream and coffee shop.

Nevada volunteer rates increase

CARSON CITY - Nevada Volunteers, the Governor's Commission on Service, and the Nevada Office of the Corporation for National and Community Service, are excited to announce that the volunteer rate in Nevada has increased, moving Nevada from 50th in 2010 to 48th (Volunteering and Civic Life in America) in the nation. In 2011, the national volunteer rate was 26.8 percent, with Nevada's rate at 22.2 percent for 2011, an increase from 20.7 percent in 2010.
