Following an injunction from the Western District of Louisiana, today the Bureau of Land Management Nevada State Office issued a final Environmental Assessment and sale notice for June 14, 2022, Oil and Gas Lease Sale.
The consensus Republican front-runner for Nevada governor drew attention and applause from a GOP luncheon audience Tuesday when he used an expletive to deride Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak's decision to enact a state-managed public health insurance option. Answering a question about homelessness, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo expressed frustration about people who don't or won't accept help from public services. He said he wanted to stop the Clark County jail from being the ``No. 1 facility'' for mental health services in Nevada.
The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) is reminding owners of poultry flocks and pet birds to practice biosecurity measures and report illnesses. A strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been detected across eastern and midwestern states, with most recent detections in Utah and Idaho. To mitigate impacts of the disease, it is important that bird owners quarantine and report sick birds to the USDA at (866) 536-7593 or the NDA state veterinarian Dr. Amy Mitchell at amitchell@agri.nv.gov.
It’s easy to let old medications pile up and sit in the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. It’s also easy not to notice when they go missing, but it happens every single day. The U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reports that 75 percent of all overdose deaths are opioid-related. Opioids, which are prescribed by doctors to treat pain, are a key source in many narcotics, according to the DEA, and can be highly addictive when misused.
On May 17-19th the Humboldt River Field Office will host the annual Lovelock Cave Days. In previous years, over 300 fourth graders from Winnemucca, Lovelock, McDermitt, and Orovada have toured the Marzen House Museum in Lovelock and Lovelock Cave for a day of fun-filled educational activities. The field office is excited to host the event again as the event was paused due to the pandemic over the last two years.

In a letter sent Friday, the seven states that use the Colorado River agreed with the U.S. Department of Interior and recommended that federal water managers take an emergency action aimed at stabilizing a dwindling Lake Powell, one of the main storage reservoirs on the river.
The country’s largest man-made reservoir, Lake Mead, has dropped to such a historically low level that Las Vegas water officials have completed the process of turning on a pump station that will allow Southern Nevada to retrieve water, even under extreme conditions.
In a packed Las Vegas club — and with just a month remaining before early voting begins — Republican Senate hopeful Adam Laxalt sought a campaign boost from the GOP’s fastest rising star and an old law school roommate: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Dubbed the “Rise Up” rally, Wednesday’s event took clear aim at the culture war, rousing the crowd of more than 1,000 people with not only attacks on Democratic economic, energy and immigration policies, but also “woke” culture and the “radical left.”
Dixie Valley, known as Paumu in Paiute, is a vast area spanning nearly 3,000 square miles near Fallon, offering a grand view of the Stillwater mountains looming tall to the west and the Clan Alpine mountains to the east. For the toi-ticutta, meaning “cattail eaters” in Paiute and now known as the Fallon Paiute Shoshone Tribe, the once-quiet valley was a place to gather medicinal plants and other resources, put deceased loved ones to rest and find respite and healing among the mountains. “When you’re out here, we ask people to be respectful because you just don’t know if you’re walking into one of the oldest churches in North America,” said Donna Cossette, a former tribal chairwoman.
A pair of Carson City judges struck what appeared to be fatal blows to proposed GOP-backed voting initiatives on Monday, invalidating efforts to roll back the Democrat-backed universal vote by mail law passed in 2021 and a measure implementing voter identification requirements. In separate rulings, Senior Judge Frances Doherty blocked the effort to file a referendum against AB321, the measure passed by lawmakers in 2021 to permanently implement universal mail-in ballot. In a separate case, Senior Judge William Maddox ruled that the voter ID initiative’s description of effect — a 200-word summary — was argumentative and ordered a new description be written, effectively scrapping all signatures collected at this point.
Debbie: This book is not about a cat. Not really. It’s about love and family and letting go. It’s a memoir from Dr. David Dosa and his time in a hospice-care nursing home, with an amazing cat as a side character, who pretty much steals the show.
Small nonfarm businesses in Churchill, Humboldt, Lander, Pershing and Washoe counties are now eligible to apply for low interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, announced Director Tanya N. Garfield of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center-West. These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by drought in Pershing County that began April 12, 2022. “SBA eligibility covers both the economic impacts on businesses dependent on farmers and ranchers that have suffered agricultural production losses caused by the disaster and businesses directly impacted by the disaster,” Garfield said.
It’s bringing locally-harvested fresh produce, handmade arts and crafts, and deliciously unique food vendors to a centralized, convenient location. The authentic taste of a freshly harvested fruit or veggie is incomparable to those that are picked up at the grocery store, and is a major draw to the local farmer’s market.
The pandemic induced many disruptions for the community, but it did not stop the determined parents of the graduating seniors. The past two years sparked creativity among the parents of students at Lowry High School, including local parent, Jennifer Ortega, who started an Adopt-a-Senior program to compensate for the unique circumstances that 2020 presented. Two years later, the program is still helping the community connect with graduating seniors and their families to dote on and encourage them as they gear up to celebrate graduation.
