A new Nevada program connects teens and young adults over text to support each other through mental health challenges. What makes the text line so unique is that it’s staffed by other trained young adults, a highly successful and evidence-based peer support model. It’s as easy as texting a friend when you’re feeling stressed or a little down.

The traffic jams happen like clockwork, clogging Interstate 15 on Sundays as weary travelers leave Las Vegas and head back to California. These situations have long prompted calls for more passenger rail to connect the two states, but so far, that talk hasn’t turned into a reality.
Top Democratic officials in Nevada are staunchly opposed to an attempt to bring ranked-choice voting to the Silver State. Voting is a fundamental element of a democratic society and allows citizens to have their say in how their local government is run. Being an informed voter is just as important as voting itself, as it is every voter’s responsibility to know how public officials will articulate their civic duties. Meet the Candidates Night, hosted by the Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce at the Convention Center, provided voters the opportunity to get to know those running for public office face-to-face and hear from them in a Q and A forum with questions randomly selected from local citizens. Most of the official races for the county will be decided at the Primary Election on June 14 with early voting held May 28 to June 10, so if voters want their say, they should vote in the Primary Election, as well as the General Election on Nov. 8.

The judges then chose three winners: Shane Rhoads, age 11, with his Stalactites and Stalagmites project, Braeden Ochoa, age 7, with The Humpty Dumpty Experiment, and Talia Jurad, age 11, with her Creating a Gas project, in no particular order.
The Humboldt County Board of Commissioners recently addressed growing concern about the county’s need for a change in Justice Court facilities at their special meeting, with Chairman Jim French absent, Commissioner Ron Cerri present via-web call, and the meeting led by Vicechairman Ken Tipton. The board had begun the extensive investigation of the costs and feasibility of courtroom renovations in years past, but the actions came to a halt as a result of the pandemic, according to City Manager Dave Mendiola.
