U.S. House of Representatives passes Recovering America’s Wildlife Act

In a historic milestone for wildlife conservation, Recovering America’s Wildlife Act (H.R. 2773; RAWA)—a bipartisan bill to enhance wildlife conservation in the United States—was passed today by the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill is considered the most significant wildlife conservation bill in more than half a century, devoting $1.4 billion annually to locally-led efforts—including approximately $24 million annually to Nevada. RAWA has received bipartisan support from a long list of congressional representatives from all over the country and provides proactive, non-regulatory conservation benefits to every state, territory, and tribal lands and waters. 

Humboldt sheriff’s office strengthens capabilities of responding deputies

Proper gear is crucial to the protection of both the public and the officers protecting the public, which is why the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is consistently working to enhance their training and quality of equipment. Each patrol shift at the HCSO has been issued protective ballistic shields to have at least one on shift with them at all times, which increases the safety of deputies and adds another layer of protection against lethal threats, according to Humboldt County Sheriff, Mike Allen.

EPA gives Nevada firm approval to turn trash to synthetic fuel oil

A northern Nevada industrial plant can begin turning tons of garbage into a synthetic oil that can be refined into fuel for airplanes, following a recent Environmental Protection Agency rule change. After five years, the EPA on June 3 finalized the rule sought by Fulcrum BioEnergy's Sierra BioFuels Plant in Storey County. A company official told the Las Vegas Review-Journal the facility would permanently employ roughly 120 people.

Cyanco holds emergency preparedness drill with local first responders

High stakes chemicals are not of the usual concerns for first responders in their daily work, but have to be in a community that is home to booming industries that handle all sorts of serious materials. The first responders in Humboldt County participated in a safety drill with Cyanco—one of the leading mineral extraction chemical manufacturers in the nation— to improve the comprehensive skills and reaction capabilities of both Cyanco and the local first responders. According to Cyanco, the drill presented an opportunity for environmental, health, and safety professionals in Winnemucca to experience a real-life scenario with which they would be responsible for in a true emergency situation, if one were to occur.

Lunches are served each weekday at noon and soup and croutons is served at 11 a.m. the Pleasant Senior Center, 1480 Lay Street in Winnemucca.  Lunches are open to the public. Suggested minimum donation is $4 for seniors age 60 and older. Due to serving the high-risk population we are only allowing under 60 if they are a caregiver for a senior and their meal has increased to $10. 

Lombardo wins GOP governor primary

Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo won a victory over the sprawling field of Republican gubernatorial candidates, as further-right figures romped to victory over opponents in other statewide GOP primaries. Early election results — largely composed of mail ballots and early vote totals — showed Lombardo winning populous Clark County by a large margin, with more than double the votes of his next closest primary rival, Reno attorney Joey Gilbert.  Most news organizations, including The Nevada Independent, called the race for Lombardo less than 30 minutes after results were first published on election day.

Albisu sought for questioning in murder and attempted murder case

A Humboldt County man with a long criminal record is being sought in connection with a murder and attempted murder on June 18 in Winnemucca. According to police officials, on June 18, 2022 at approximately 8:50 pm, officers from The Winnemucca Police Department responded to a shots fired call at Raven’s Bar located at 1062 Grass Valley Road. 

Primary election ends some races, sets field for upcoming General

Several races were decided after the closed primary election and in Humboldt County, the elections were canvassed during a special meeting of Humboldt County commissioners June 20.  

Great Western Steam-Up features days of family fun

The Great Western Steam Up – a four-day Fourth of July celebration planned July 1-4 at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City – will not only give families a look back in history, but an opportunity to immerse themselves in it. The event will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the rail line that connected Virginia City and San Francisco for passenger service via the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. It includes an unprecedented “reunion” of V&T locomotives from the heyday of the railroad – nicknamed the Queen of the Short Lines.

Bureau of Land Management accepting comments on August geothermal lease sale

The Bureau of Land Management is asking the public to review and provide comment on documents for its August 30, 2022, geothermal lease sale. The sale includes 81 parcels totaling 237,039.110 acres in the Battle Mountain, Carson City, Elko, and Winnemucca Districts of Nevada. 

Black Rock Field Office issues final Environmental Assessment for the Jackson Mountains Herd Management Area Wild Horse Gather Plan

WINNEMUCCA – Today, the Black Rock Field Office signed and issued the Environmental Assessment, Decision Record and Finding of No Significant Impact documents for the Jackson Mountains Herd Management Area located in Humboldt County. The public comment period was open from August 27 to Sept. 26, 2021.

USDA invests $9.6 million to expand business opportunities in rural region

USDA Rural Development Nevada State Director Lucas Ingvoldstad today announced that the Department is investing $9.6 million to help create new and better market opportunities for rural businesses and people in Nevada. “The two investments we’re announcing today are different from each other in program and purpose, however they represent the interest USDA has in ensuring Nevada’s rural economy thrives,” said Ingvoldstad. “Whether investing in entrepreneurship for new business or the growth of an existing one, we celebrate the economic strength of innovators and pacesetters in our small communities.”

Summer Camp Matters

Kids (and adults!) who grow up attending summer camp usually have great stories to tell about adventures and learning.  Whether it is church, band, Scouting, or an athletic camp, parents who make the financial and time sacrifice to get their kids to camp reap the benefits for a lifetime.  Of course, as a kid, it will simply be viewed as an escape from the normal routine, but upon reflection they will giggle at all the things learned, intended and un-intended.

A survey by the National Garden Association found 93 percent of the American gardeners surveyed grew tomatoes. Unfortunately, there are more production problems growing tomatoes than growing many other garden vegetables.
