The Lovelock Frontiers Day parade is this Saturday morning. The paraders line up on Sixth Street by the community center between 8 and 9:30 a.m. At 10 a.m. they will proceed down Dartmouth Avenue to the courthouse park. Hearing on Gilbert claim that ‘illegal formula’ skewed election could come next week

More than a week after Republican gubernatorial candidate and Reno-area attorney Joey Gilbert filed a formal challenge to his primary loss against Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, it remains unclear precisely when a judge will hear the case. Though two pre-trial hearings were held over video conference last week, no date for a hearing on Gilbert’s case has been set. However, Carson City District Court Judge James Wilson has signaled that the case could be heard as soon as this week (Aug. 1 through Aug. 5) to expedite proceedings in case of an appeal, though existing court scheduling could delay a hearing until the following week.

Democratic Party officials discuss holding simultaneous Nevada, New Hampshire primaries

National Democratic Party officials Friday debated the merits of allowing Nevada and New Hampshire to hold primaries on the same day, while others wondered if the party should give Black voters in the South a more prominent role as the party considers changes to the presidential primary calendar. The Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) 32-member Rules and Bylaws Committee (RBC) will choose up to five states to hold early primaries and determine the order beginning with the 2024 presidential cycle. Friday’s virtual meeting was the last before the RBC meets in August to render a decision.

Nevada court fights raise caution flags on green energy push

RENO, Nev. (AP)— Opposition from friends, not foes, is creating potential roadblocks to President Joe Biden's green energy agenda on federal lands in the blue-leaning, Western swing state of Nevada. Two lithium mines and a geothermal power plant in the works in the biggest U.S. gold-mining state are under attack from conservationists, tribes and others who otherwise generally support Biden's efforts to expedite the transition from fossil fuels to renewables. The conflicts put a spotlight on an emerging reality as the Biden administration tries to meet its goal of having the U.S. power grid run on clean energy by 2035.

Nurses in red T-shirts — some with the word “heroes” crossed out and replaced with the word “humans” — held signs and played music outside of St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center on a June afternoon as passing drivers honked in support.  The strike was one of several in the past few years organized by nurses, who are finding themselves overworked amid a staffing shortage. Caitlin McDaniel, a nurse on the surgical-orthopedic floor of St. Mary’s, said that she was out striking for the well-being of her patients, who could face safety hazards on account of understaffing.

What is Leaf Scorch?

The past couple of weeks, I have been asked to look at numerous trees and shrubs that have dead, dried up leaves. The plants may just have the outer edges turning brown (appear to be burned) or the leaves are completely brown except for the main leaf veins. These symptoms would indicate a condition called “Leaf Scorch”.
