Victim named in fatal officer-involved shooting, I-80 chase

Authorities investigating an officer-involved shooting after a high-speed chase on Interstate 80 east of Reno earlier this month haven't determined yet whether a deputy killed the victim or he shot himself. The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner's Office identified the Aug. 4 victim as 40-year-old Tony Dehart of Winnemucca, KRNV-TV reported Friday.

Northern Nevada’s ‘Victory Project’ receives $25 billion grant

FERNLEY — With the awarding of a $25 million federal grant, Fernley’s logistic hub received a big boost Wednesday to connect Interstate 80 to U.S. Highway 50, expand the dual access of two rail lines and become an important supply chain hub. U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, along with Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy Carlos Monje, Fernley Mayor Roy Edgington Jr., and other local and state leaders touted the grant for the Victory Project that will increase the efficiency of the supply chain, make goods more affordable and expand logistics and manufacturing capacity throughout the region.

Purchase BLM Elko District fuelwood-cutting permits online

The Bureau of Land Management Elko District has fuelwood-cutting permits available online through the BLM Special Forest Products Online System. Online permits are available for purchase 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Nominations now open for 2023 award to Recognize Inspirational School Employees

Governor Steve Sisolak’s Office, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Education (NDE), opened the nomination and application period for the 2023 Recognizing Inspirational School Employees (RISE) Award. The RISE award, passed by Congress in 2019 and overseen by the U.S. Department of Education (USED), honors classified school employees who provide exemplary service.

Needle exchange project modeled on urban efforts aims to save lives in rural Nevada

Richard Cusolito believes he’s saving lives by distributing clean syringes and needles to people who use drugs in this rural area of northeastern Nevada — but he knows some residents disagree. “I’m hated in this town because of it,” said Cusolito, 60. “I’m accused of ‘enabling the junkies,’ pretty much is the standard term. People don’t get the impact of this whole thing.”

GOP Super PAC to launch $2 million ad campaign attacking Cortez Masto over IRS expansion

A Republican-aligned Super PAC is dropping a massive seven-figure television advertising blitz in Nevada’s Senate race aimed at attacking Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) over the hiring of more Internal Revenue Service (IRS) staff through the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act. The ad is part of a $2 million buy and will run for two weeks in Las Vegas starting Saturday. It was produced by Club for Growth Action, the Super PAC associated with the conservative Club for Growth. 

Buckaroo Hall of Fame to induct four

Two men from eastern Oregon, Merlin Rupp and Jack Peila and two from northern Nevada, Woodie Bell and George T. Fairchild will be inducted into the Buckaroo Hall of Fame on Sept 3, in conjunction with the 40th annual Western Art Roundup and Buckaroo Heritage event in Winnemucca, Nevada.

Annual Labor Day Parade to return for 101st year

Humboldt County’s largest parade will celebrate its 101st year Labor Day weekend with the theme “Hometown Harvest.” Ag 3 Director Kim Petersen said entrants may interpret the theme as they see fit. “This will be a fun theme and a fun way for participants to celebrate our annual Tri-County Fair & Stampede.”
