Not impressed with the state’s Pre-K-12 education system, including decisions that Gov. Steve Sisolak made for schools at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Republican gubernatorial candidate and Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo has released his priorities for Nevada schools if elected. "Las Vegas area schools have been ranked worst in the nation for quality, and our state is ranked 49th in education – how is this acceptable?” he asked in a Tuesday press release. Lombardo’s top priorities for education include restoring funding to Nevada’s Read by Grade 3 program, reversing a restorative justice student discipline law approved in 2019 and evaluating initiatives to break up the Clark County School District.
After nearly 20 years spent as a civil and criminal defense attorney operating her own law firm, Republican Sigal Chattah is running to be the next top prosecutor in Nevada, with one key message: “Make crime illegal again.” Throughout her campaign, she has railed against recent Democratic-led efforts to reform the state’s criminal justice system, including lessening sentences for certain nonviolent offenses, and she’s cast herself as a crusader against government corruption. Chattah declined to participate in an interview with The Nevada Independent, and her campaign did not provide answers to a set of questions seeking details about her policy positions as of Wednesday evening.
In the sweltering heat of the desert near Nellis Air Force Base, where fighter jets briefly drowned out the speakers, Republican Senate Candidate Adam Laxalt sat beside Rick Perry — a former Texas governor, failed presidential candidate and eventually energy secretary — to talk about oil. Calling Laxalt a friend to the fossil fuel industry, Perry railed against Democratic rollbacks of Trump-era drilling policies and cast the broader energy ecosystem, in part, as a micro-economic issue.
The former acting chief of the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) says he blames the governor’s office for actions that slowed down Nevada’s response to a torrent of unemployment claims during the pandemic, and he believes concerns about political optics and news headlines played an outsized role in the response to the crisis.
The Nevada Supreme Court has affirmed a lower-court ruling that a statutory ballot initiative that aimed to create a voucher-style education program cannot move forward. The order, signed by all justices and filed on Monday, appears to be the final chapter in this legal battle that started in late January. That’s when a political action committee called Education Freedom for Nevada filed both a statutory and a constitutional initiative with the secretary of state’s office. The pair of initiatives sought to create “education freedom accounts” that would allow parents to access state funds to pay for educational environments or services outside the public school system.
Although, alfalfa production was limited this year, because of the lack of irrigation water, it is still important to maintain proper soil nutrient levels to prevent any further stress on the plants. Determining when applications of nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers are needed is also important to maintain alfalfa yield and quality. The Western U.S. is diverse in terms of climate, soil types, irrigation water need and availability, historical nutrient use and alfalfa production systems. Therefore, few generalizations hold regarding the timing and location of N, S, K and P deficiencies.

Foster care provides an alternative living situation for children and teens whose homes are deemed unsafe and unstable in times of hardship. Humboldt County has only three total foster homes, all of which are currently full. This means that kids have to be sent far away from what they know during an already stressful and traumatic time.

It seems I have always had a dog – from Bumpy and Buttons when I was growing up to our current dogs, Jigsaw and Kathmandu. As you well know, dog stories abound with pet owners and as Kat munched my shoe, snuck into the cookies, and immediately moved into “Sit” position when I neared the pantry door where her treats are kept, I decided this week was a perfect time to talk about canines.
