Nevada State Treasurer candidate Michele Fiore described herself as a “workaholic” during a Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce candidate forum last month. She touted her decades of entrepreneurship — having been CEO of a construction firm, a home health care company, a consulting company, and a publishing firm — and experience as a former state legislator, from 2012 to 2016, and Ward 6 councilwoman for Las Vegas since 2017. With teacher and student success undoubtedly connected, it makes sense that the Humboldt County School District (HCSD) is investing in support for teachers. According to Traci Carbon, HCSD Educator Effectiveness Coordinator, there are 23 teachers who are new to Humboldt County or are brand new to teaching this year. She works with these teachers personally on a monthly or weekly basis to figure out what each of them need to succeed. “[Teachers’] number one reason for leaving the profession is feeling like they don’t have enough support, so when our new group of teachers came in this year, we said we want to make sure that we really support these folks in all ways,” said Carbon.

In a midterm campaign season dominated by inflation, abortion and crime, there's another issue that is becoming more urgent in Western states: drought. The topic of water historically has played little to no role in campaign ads in much of the region, but funding to fight drought is coming up now in door-knocking campaigns and is on the long list of talking points that advocacy groups are using to rally voters in two states with vulnerable Democratic incumbents and looming water cuts: Nevada and Arizona.

At Nevada Outdoor School we are singing praises for a summer of clear skies! No smoke is worthy of celebration! We are thankful for wet afternoon thunderstorms and fire prevention behavior because without the fires and smoke of years past we have been able to really enjoy Nevada blue skies for our own recreation as well as our opportunities to share nature with kids. There is no doubt that when the air is fresh and clean there is a positive reaction in our bodies and our minds.

A judge on Tuesday postponed the arraignment of an elected official accused of killing a Las Vegas investigative reporter who authorities say clawed and fought for his life when he was attacked outside his home.
