Comment period extended for Sage Grouse protection proposal

RENO - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is reopening the public comment period on its proposal to protect the Bi-State Distinct Population Segment (DPS) of greater sage-grouse along the California-Nevada border as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. The proposal includes a special rule that would provide increased flexibility for land management practices that are intended to benefit the sage-grouse. The additional 30-day comment period was announced in the Federal Register on Aug. 5.

Health care concerns remain with local vets

U.S. military veterans and their families have addressed concerns over Veteran's Administration (VA) hospital-provided healthcare since the issue came to light last winter. Concerns over waiting times, canceled appointments and other issues as well as reported "back log lists" and veteran deaths at VA facilities in Arizona, South Carolina, and Wyoming have led to shake-ups in the administration and the resignation of former VA secretary Eric Shinseki in May.

New report shows budget impact of rising firefighting costs

WASHINGTON - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced a new report showing that as the cost of fighting forest fires has rapidly increased over the last 20 years, the budgets for other forest programs, including those that can help prevent and mitigate fire damage, have substantially shrunk. The Forest Service's firefighting appropriation has rapidly risen as a proportion of the Forest Service's overall budget, increasing from 16 percent in 1995 to 42 percent today, forcing cuts in other budget areas.

Free Bugles available for teachers

Program enables newspaper to be used as a teaching tool

As part of the national Newspapers In Education program, The Battle Mountain Bugle is offered for free to any teachers in Lander County to use in their classrooms. Last year and the year before, in Lander County, 11 teachers, some at every school, took part in the program.
