Operation Dry Water -

Law enforcement looking for boaters under the influence

Game wardens with the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), along with the Washoe County Sherriff's Office and the National Park Service at Lake Mead National Recreation Area will be targeting boaters operating under the influence (OUI) this weekend in waters across the state as part of a nationally coordinated enforcement effort dubbed "Operation Dry Water."

Task force draft under review

On July 10, the Lander County Commission will be reviewing the final draft regarding Nevada's public lands. AB 227, passed during the 2013 Nevada legislative session, created the Nevada Lands Management Task Force to study issues surrounding how public lands controlled by the federal government would be managed if they were transferred to the State of Nevada.

International high school exchange students seeking local host families

Visiting students, ages 15-18, from around the world including Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and Thailand are seeking host families in and around Battle Mountain for the upcoming 2014-2015 academic school year. Host families are needed for the fall semester and full school year.

CARSON CITY - Nevada gets an "F" in a new report analyzing how each state supports - or doesn't support - new parents and families, with policies that encourage paid time off and job protection when people have to take a leave for parenting or care-giving.

Lately, I have received numerous calls about how to control grasshoppers and crickets around homes and gardens. And currently, my office has been invaded by crickets, the common field crickets not the Mormon Crickets. So, the question is, "What can I do about these critters?"

Schneider sentenced to jail time

Starlynn Schneider pleads guilty to two charges

Starlynn Schneider, who was initially charged with child neglect and principal to statutory seduction, and arrested later on further charges, pleaded guilty per a plea agreement June 2 to contributing to the delinquency of a minor and unlawful trespass upon land, both misdemeanors.

USDA provides funding to boost honey bee population

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), today announced $8 million in Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) incentives for Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin farmers and ranchers who establish new habitats for declining honey bee populations. More than half of the commercially managed honey bees are in these five states during the summer.

USDA farm bill helps farmers manage risk

WASHINGTON - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced continued progress in implementing provisions of the 2014 Farm Bill that provide new risk management options for farmers and ranchers. These improvements to crop insurance programs will provide better protection from weather disaster, market volatility and other risk factors to ensure farmers aren't wiped out by events beyond their control.
