CARSON CITY - State Treasurer Kate Marshall announced that her office and the Nevada College Savings Board is sponsoring the sixth annual Nevada $529 College Savings Day Contest, which is open to Nevada residents with children age 13 or younger. Twelve students will receive a prize of a $529 gift to be used to open an SSgA Upromise 529 Plan (the "Plan") college savings plan account, or to enhance an existing Nevada College Savings Plan account.
Two hundred concerned citizens turned out May 17 for the Grass Tour of the Argenta Allotment south of Battle Mountain that ranchers claim was closed for grazing earlier this year by the Bureau of Land Management's District Manager Doug Furtado.
CARSON CITY - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Nevada Department of Corrections are hosting the second of three annual saddle-trained horse adoption events in Carson City on Saturday, May 31, at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) located at 1721 Snyder Avenue.
Fifth Grade Students at the Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School recently participated in a different kind of science fair called Invention Convention. The unit of study took about five weeks and used skills from the entire curriculum. Students took surveys, researched established products, designed display boards, wrote a marketing plan, presented their inventions to judges, and had to create a working model of their idea.
Christ Lutheran Preschool completed its twelfth year and celebrated with several special events during May. The Pre-K classes visited kindergarten. Each of the four classes performed in a Spring Program and families enjoyed fellowship together with refreshments following each performance. The school year ended with a special play day with an obstacle course, exploration of bubbles and painting outdoors. The Pre-K classes concluded the year with a farewell picnic for families. WASHINGTON - According to a Congressionally-mandated report issued recently, the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of the Interior (DOI) are projected to spend over $470 million more than is available to fight wildfires this season. According to the report, the Forest Service and Interior may need to spend $1.8 billion fighting fires this year, while the agencies have only $1.4 billion available for firefighting.

The National Weather Service told KTVN that radar data from that day shows a storm about 20 miles south of Battle Mountain with weak rotational signatures. The NWS said they were not able to determine if the funnel cloud in the picture touched the ground, but if it did, it would be considered a tornado.

HEATHER HILL • The Battle Mountain BugleIrene Mackley was one of many voters who took to the polls to vote early and avoid the crowds on Election Day June 10. Early voting started May 24 and ends June 6. Some of the days have seen small numbers of people while other days have seen as many as 50. Election Day is sure to draw a crowd with some exciting races on the ballot including the ones for Lander County Commission districts 2 and 5 and the Sixth Judicial District judge race.
