Newmont board chair: Company will remain independent

In a letter to the Barrick Gold Corp. board of directors released last week, chairman of Newmont's board of directors Vincent A. Calarco responded to recent conversations with Barrick about a potential company merger and said Newmont has decided to end any attempts to work toward a merger agreement with the other company.

Nevadans who had trouble signing up for insurance have until May 30 to enroll

CARSON CITY - Nevada Health Link is reminding all Nevadans who were unsuccessful in signing up for health insurance on the NevadaHealthLink.com website because of technical issues that it's not too late to finish the process. Those who had problems trying to sign up for health insurance during the regular enrollment period have until May 30, 2014, due to a special enrollment period enacted by the Exchange.

BLM approves pilot project to treat wild horses with fertility control

CARSON CITY - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City, Sierra Front Field Office has approved a pilot project to treat wild horses that reside near the Fish Springs community, approximately 10 miles south of the Pine Nut Herd Management Area, with fertility control porcine zona pellucide (PZP).

Forest services postpones sage grouse hearings

RENO - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced it is postponing public hearings on proposals to protect the Bi-State Distinct Population Segment (DPS) of greater sage-grouse along the California-Nevada border under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The hearings that were scheduled for April 29, 2014, in Minden, Nev., and April 30, 2014, in Bishop, Calif., will be rescheduled for those same locations.

SBA to award $8 million to promote small businesses

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The SBA announced recently that for the third year, states will be able to apply for grants from the U.S. Small Business Administration to support efforts to increase exporting by small businesses. The State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) Grant Program was appropriated $8 million to award grants by Sept. 30, 2014. Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis.

Initial unemployment claims continue steady downward trend

CARSON CITY - In March, 13,267 initial claims for unemployment insurance were filed in Nevada, a 14 percent drop compared to March 2013, and a drop of 64 percent compared to the worst month of the recession. Initial claims have fallen compared to the previous year for 16 straight months and in 49 of the past 52 months.

Federal funds to help rural small businesses

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - As part of the Obama Administration's new "Made in Rural America" export and investment initiative, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced the creation of a new investment fund that will help propel the growth of small businesses across rural America. The new Rural Business Investment Company (RBIC) will now allow USDA to facilitate private equity investments in agriculture-related businesses. Currently, USDA programs exist to help provide loans or loan guarantees to help rural businesses grow, but many small cutting-edge businesses also need equity support in addition to or instead of borrowed funds.
