Two awards honor hospital's commitment to patients

Battle Mountain General Hospital's Kelley Price, chief nursing officer, and Joy Greenhalgh, who is in charge of infection control and employee health, said they were thrilled about the hospital receiving recognition for its programs by getting two awards for which they competed with hospitals across the state.

UNR Holocaust tribute April 7

RENO - Congress established the Days of Remembrance as the nation's annual commemoration of the Holocaust and created the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum as a permanent living memorial to the victims. The remembrance theme designated by the museum for 2014 is Confronting the Holocaust: American Responses, and events are planned throughout the country to honor the observance.

Jobless rate drops again in February

CARSON CITY - Nevada's unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent in February, which equates to 116,600 people who are jobless. The rate declined 0.2 of a percentage point from January to February and 0.5 of a percentage point since December, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Farm Bill gives producers more opportunities

WASHINGTON - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced increased opportunity for producers as a result of the 2014 Farm Bill. A fact sheet outlining modifications to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Farm Loan Programs is available here.

St. John Bosco's to hold fish fry

St. John Bosco's Altar Society and Kights of Columbus will hold a fish fry on Friday, April 11 at 6 P.M. in the St. John Bosco Catholic Church Hall.

Her daughter, Isabella DeAllah, 13, (not pictured) joined her in beautifying the outside of their Weaver Avenue home.

Ag secretary claims progress on Farm Bill

WASHINGTON - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced significant progress on implementing the Agricultural Act of 2014 (the 2014 Farm Bill), which President Obama signed into law on Feb. 7. The 2014 Farm Bill reforms agricultural policy, reduces the deficit, and helps grow the economy.

BLM reschedules Elko/ southern Nevada competitive oil and gas lease sale

RENO -The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Nevada has rescheduled the Elko/Southern Nevada Competitive Oil and Gas Lease Sale for Sept. 9, 2014; the sale was originally scheduled for June 24, 2014. It will be held the same day as the Winnemucca/Carson City Competitive Oil and Gas Lease Sale.

Youth flood Jacob's Well

Center gives young people a safe place to go

Jacob's Well Youth Center has been overflowing with young people since its doors opened four years ago. It averages from seven to 17 youth a day when it is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Director Ruby Bryant said. The center is for those ages 12 to 18.

Archery club aiming high

Size of group more than doubles in two years

The Battle Mountain Archery Club is taking a shot to expand membership by leasing a plot of land from the county. The club, which reformed in February 2012, has more than doubled from 12 members in the first year to over 30 members now, said Angela Alexander, the group's advertising director.

Forest service is looking for contract drivers with vehicles during fire season

SPARKS - The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is soliciting quotes for vehicles with drivers for fire suppression. The types of vehicles are sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, stakesides and passenger vans for use during local, regional, and nationwide fire suppression and all-hazard incidents. Individuals will have to have all required driving and registration documentation within the state of residence.
