BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The St. John Bosco Christmas Bazaar was held Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the St. John Bosco Hall and attracted a substantial crowd throughout the event, said Laurie Pluemer, president of the Altar Society.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - At the dawn of the 20th century, Battle Mountain residents celebrated Christmas together, as they had previously, with a community tree and a formal ball. Eighty years ago, the Volunteer Fire Department's New Year's Eve party became the community event of choice.

The Postal Service offers free, environmentally friendly Priority Mail and Express Mail boxes and envelopes. These supplies can be ordered at usps.com or picked up at a local post office.
LAS VEGAS - Lower prices at the pump continue to be enjoyed by Nevada motorists as prices dropped another 2 cents in one week. All major metro area showed decreases of at least 5 cents last week, according to the AAA Nevada monthly gas survey.

LAS VEGAS - Nevada State Bank is launching a "Beautiful Nevada Essay Contest" and asking the state's students to answer "What Makes Nevada Beautiful to You?" The contest began Dec. 9 and the submission period ends Jan. 31, 2014. A total of $30,000 will be given out to Nevada's public schools.
Each class at Kids in Motion Preschool adopted two seniors off of the Battle Mountain Bugle's Angel tree, which is located at The Colt.
HEATHER HILL • The Battle Mountain BugleElaine Domagala's class at Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School got into the spirit of the holiday season by adopting five angels off of The Battle Mountain Bugle's Angel Tree at The Colt. Students in the class collected enough money to fill all five of the wish lists. They also compiled a stocking stuffer box for all of their angels. It contained student-created pictures, notes, poems and letters. WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service plans to open the 2014 filing season on Jan. 31 and encouraged taxpayers to use e-file or Free File as the fastest way to receive refunds.
LAS VEGAS - Fearing a setback for financially strapped homeowners and disruption to a slowly improving housing market, Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto has joined again with 41 attorneys general from around the country in urging Congress to extend soon-to-be expired tax relief for distressed homeowners into next year.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Eight local churches joined forces Nov. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Battle Mountain Civic Center to offer a free Thanksgiving meal for all local residents that included all of the traditional holiday foods.
