Agreement approved with Summit Engineering to finish mapping of minor county roads

Task 2 to cost $244,000

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County commissioners unanimously approved at their July 25 meeting a standard agreement for consulting services between the county and Summit Engineering for $244,000 for GIS services Phase 1, Task 2, of the Minor Road Mapping Project.

Rabies clinic a huge success

Sixty-eight animals examined in Battle Mountain

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - There were 68 Battle Mountain animals examined at the Lander County Sheriff's Office Animal Control's annual rabies clinic, held July 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Battle Mountain Volunteer Fire Department firehouse. There were 67 dogs that left with their tails wagging and one cat was seen as well, said Lander County Animal Control Officer Terri Glazier.

Great Basin College receives $500,000 matching grant from NEH

ELKO - The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announced recently $33 million in grants for 173 humanities projects, including $500,000 to Great Basin College for the establishment of a Virtual Humanities Center.

Library summer program encourages kids to read

U.S.S. Lander memorabilia on display at library

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain Branch of the Elko, Lander and Eureka library system attracted seven to 10 kids during each day of its Dig Into Reading program that was held at the library July 8 - 12.

Hazmat training -

MICHAEL MICHAELSEN • Special to the BugleBattle Mountain residents Brian Boyd (striped T-shirt), with the National Weather Service, and Randie Potter (white T-shirt), an intern with the Lander County Sheriff's Department, took part in a hazardous materials emergency training exercise July 30 in Winnemucca. The two volunteered to be decontaminated as part of the training. The drill involved numerous agencies and emergency responders and was coordinated by Union Pacific Railroad, which provided a tanker car for the training. The scenario involved a simulated leak of anhydrous ammonia. Railroad officials offered training on how railroad cars work, how to shut off valves, who to contact, etc. in the event of a real emergency.

Centenarian celebration -

COURTESY PHOTODorothy Mae Haines from Phoenix, Ariz., celebrated her 100th birthday at the Miles End Lodge in Kingston on Thursday, Aug. 1, with 16 people in attendance. Three were from Arizona, two from Pennsylvania, two from California and nine who live in Kingston. She also celebrated her birthday by attending the Kingston Days celebration Aug. 2 - 3, visited Lake Tahoe on Aug. 4 - 5, Virginia City on Aug. 6 and will be at Hot August Nights in Reno from Aug. 7 - 14. She lives with her daughter in Phoenix and will be staying at her son's place in Kingston. During her 100 years she has visited Australia, Canada, Mexico and 36 of the United States. When asked what she did during the last 100 years, she said, "Chasing men." One of her birthday cards contained $50 and when she opened it, she said, "Cha-ching, where's the slot machine?"

Nevada State Board of Health elects new chairman

CARSON CITY - The Nevada State Board of Health elected Edwin (Flip) Homansky, M.D. as its new chairman during the June 2013 meeting. Dr. Homansky has been a member of the Board of Health since April 2, 2008. He replaces Roger Works, DVM, who has served since 2001.
