Law enforcement to crack down on distracted driving

CARSON CITY - April is National Distracted Driving Month, and local law enforcement will be "Joining Forces" from April 1 - 22 to look for drivers not paying attention to the road.

School board approves contract for new assistant superintendent

WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County school board approved the contract of the district's new assistant superintendent, Dawn Hagness, at their meeting last week and she will be bringing with her a wealth of experience, according to Superintendent Dr. Dave Jensen.

Residents urged to call 811 before breaking ground

CARSON CITY - April marks the sixth annual National Safe Digging Month, reminding Nevada residents to call 811 two working days before any digging project.

Nevada $529 College Savings Day contest provides financial reward to students

Twelve students will be selected

CARSON CITY - State Treasurer Kate Marshall announced recently that her office and the Nevada College Savings Board is sponsoring the fifth annual Nevada $529 College Savings Day Contest, which is open to all Nevada Kindergarten through fifth grade students. Twelve students will receive a prize of a $529 gift to be used to open an SSgA Upromise 529 Plan (the "Plan") college savings plan account, or to enhance an existing Nevada College Savings Plan account. Five students from Clark County, three from Washoe County, and two each from northern rural Nevada and southern rural Nevada will be selected via a random drawing.

USDA invites rural small businesses and agricultural producers to apply for Rural Energy for America program funds

CARSON CITY - USDA Rural Development Energy Coordinator Mark Williams is reminding rural small businesses and agricultural producers that funds are now available to help them improve energy efficiency or install renewable energy systems. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) remains focused on carrying out its mission, despite a time of significant budget uncertainty. The announcement is one part of the Department's efforts to strengthen the rural economy.

CARSON CITY - April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This month and throughout the year, the State of Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making Nevada a better place for children and families. "By ensuring parents have the knowledge, skills and resources they need to care for their children, we can help promote children's social and emotional well-being and prevent child maltreatment within families and communities," said Mike Willden, director, DHHS.

Students named to WJHS honor roll

WINNEMUCCA - The following seventh grade students were named to the third quarter honor roll at Winnemucca Junior High School.

NV Energy supports statewide organizations with $389,000 in grants during first quarter

RENO - During the first quarter of 2013, the NV Energy Foundation contributed $389,000, including multi-year commitments, to nonprofit organizations statewide. Northern Nevada organizations that received grants included the DRI GreenPower Program, American Red Cross - Northern Nevada Chapter, Nevada Museum of Art, Imlay Safe Haven Rescue Zoo, Winnemucca Senior Center, Tahoe Rim Trail and Virginia City Community Chest.

Sonoma students showcased projects last month at science fair

Sonoma Heights Elementary hosted a science fair on Feb. 27 and students set up their projects early in the day to be judged. During the evening program, participants and winners were announced. Each project was required to have a journal of information that demonstrated data collection over four weeks, a report of their work, and a display board documenting their project. The local Lego League Club, run by Blaine and Brenda Olson, also put on a demonstration for the science lovers in attendance.

County commissioners approve senior center transportation grant

Their goals are to clean up our lands, prevent illegal dumping, create awareness/education, and essentially treat our land with respect by keeping it beautiful.
