USDA invites rural small businesses and agricultural producers to apply for Rural Energy for America program funds

CARSON CITY - USDA Rural Development Energy Coordinator Mark Williams is reminding rural small businesses and agricultural producers that funds are now available to help them improve energy efficiency or install renewable energy systems. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) remains focused on carrying out its mission, despite a time of significant budget uncertainty. The announcement is one part of the Department's efforts to strengthen the rural economy.

Agency focused on making Nevada safe for children

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month -

CARSON CITY - April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This month and throughout the year, the State of Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making Nevada a better place for children and families. "By ensuring parents have the knowledge, skills and resources they need to care for their children, we can help promote children's social and emotional well-being and prevent child maltreatment within families and communities," said Mike Willden, director, DHHS.

Students named to WJHS honor roll

WINNEMUCCA - The following seventh grade students were named to the third quarter honor roll at Winnemucca Junior High School.

NV Energy supports statewide organizations with $389,000 in grants during first quarter

RENO - During the first quarter of 2013, the NV Energy Foundation contributed $389,000, including multi-year commitments, to nonprofit organizations statewide. Northern Nevada organizations that received grants included the DRI GreenPower Program, American Red Cross - Northern Nevada Chapter, Nevada Museum of Art, Imlay Safe Haven Rescue Zoo, Winnemucca Senior Center, Tahoe Rim Trail and Virginia City Community Chest.

Sonoma students showcased projects last month at science fair

Sonoma Heights Elementary hosted a science fair on Feb. 27 and students set up their projects early in the day to be judged. During the evening program, participants and winners were announced. Each project was required to have a journal of information that demonstrated data collection over four weeks, a report of their work, and a display board documenting their project. The local Lego League Club, run by Blaine and Brenda Olson, also put on a demonstration for the science lovers in attendance.

County commissioners approve senior center transportation grant

RESPECT seeks to prevent illegal dumping, create awareness and organize cleanups

WINNEMUCCA - RESPECT has organized a group of volunteers to create major "cleanup" in and around our community. The name of their organization is RESPECT. Their goals are to clean up our lands, prevent illegal dumping, create awareness/education, and essentially treat our land with respect by keeping it beautiful.

Wildfire Awareness Week May 4-11 -

JOYCE SHEEN • The Humboldt SunHumboldt County commissioners voted their support for the declaration of May 4-11 as Nevada Wildfire Awareness Week. BLM Fire Mitigation and Education Specialist Terah Maslum (left) and Program Manager Derek Messmer recently told the commissioners this year's campaign theme will be "Reduce Fuels, Reduce Fire."Prior to the wildfire awareness week next month, Maslum and Messmer will be putting up posters picturing several residents from around the state doing fuels reduction work on their property. The posters feature a picture of Paradise Valley resident Maureen Smith doing fuels reduction by spraying weeds on her northern Nevada property.

Power Paws 4-H Dog Club offers obedience classes

WINNEMUCCA - The Power Paws 4-H Dog Club will offer obedience classes to members of the public and their dogs beginning April 29.
