WINNEMUCCA - My sister Beth and sister-in-law Becky dropped by my house unexpectedly this week. Late February is the official beginning of my gardening season, and I was preparing to plant some seeds that need an exceptionally early start.

WINNEMUCCA - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Winnemucca District, working cooperatively with federal, state, and local agencies, as well as other public stakeholders has begun first-year fire rehabilitation projects intended to address the large scale resource impacts caused by the Holloway Fire, Hanson Fire, Long Canyon Fire, Buckskin Fire, and Buffalo Fires, which collectively burned over 250,000 acres across the District. The BLM has received commitments of funding or resources from Nevada Muleys, Nevada Chukar Foundation, Nevada Bighorns-Reno, Nevada Bighorns-Midas, Newmont Mining, and Nevada Department of Wildlife.
WINNEMUCCA -Humboldt General Hospital's Diabetes Support Group will meet next week. Diabetics, pre-diabetics, caregivers and those who are interested in preventing diabetes are invited to attend from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in the hospital's Sonoma conference room.
WINNEMUCCA - The Frugal Flamingo Thrift Shop welcomed the New Year with a huge surprise from a local retailer.
The freshman February student of the month is Makayla Lopez. Makayla was nominated by Mrs. James. She always represents a positive attitude and sets a positive example. She portrays the quality of leadership and serves as a role model. Mrs. James claims, "Makayla adds much to my life. She is involved in many different aspects of Lowry High School like cheerleading and leadership. She is trustworthy, hard-working and maintains her grades."
RENO - The University of Nevada School of Medicine's Nevada Geriatric Education Center is offering free training sessions in Elko and Winnemucca in March for anyone caring for older adults.
CARSON CITY - Applications are now being accepted from high school students to attend the 53nd Nevada Youth Range Camp to be held June 16-22 at the U.S. Forest Service's Big Creek Campground in central Nevada. Applications must be submitted by Tuesday, April 30.
