School district schedules sessions on new state standards

WINNEMUCCA - Parents have two more opportunities this week to hear about the new state standards that begin to take effect this year in the school district.

WINNEMUCCA - Joyce Sheen has joined the Humboldt Sun newsroom as a full-time reporter. She has 20 years of experience writing the news of Humboldt County for KWNA AM and FM Radio, and also wrote for the Silver Pinyon Journal and Inside Northern Nevada.

MICHAEL MICHAELSEN • Special to the SunSanta never misses a fun holiday parade! The jolly fellow made an appearance at the Parade of Lights in Winnemucca on Saturday evening. A couple of special guests were invited to ride on Santa's sleigh during the parade. Alexander Patino, a second-grader at Winnemucca Grammar School, and Elizabeth Gilboy, a fourth-grader at Grass Valley Elementary School, were winners in the Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce's coloring contest.

'FRUGAL FLAMINGO' THRIFT SHOP ANNOUNCES HOLIDAY HOURS

WINNEMUCCA - The "Frugal Flamingo" has announced its hours for the upcoming holidays. The thrift shop, located at 720 E. Fourth St., will be closed from Monday, Dec. 24, through Wednesday, Dec. 26, so that volunteers can spend Christmas with their families.

Local teenager killed in I-80 rollover

WINNEMUCCA - A local family of five was travelling west on Interstate 80 near Fernley on Saturday morning when their SUV rolled over and ejected 16-year old Yesica P. Juanes, who sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Carolers rode around in a one-horse open sleigh (pulled by a pickup) in a light snowstorm, singing their favorite Christmas songs. Janet Johnson, who sent in the photo, wanted to say thanks to all who helped to make the sleigh ride possible. It will bring delight for many Christmas' to come, she said.

Icy conditions lead to snowplow accident

MICHAEL MICHAELSEN • Special to the SunA snow plow traveling west on Interstate 80 on icy road conditions Saturday night near Golconda Summit rolled over into the median causing major damage to the vehicle but no injuries to the driver, according to Nevada Highway Patrol. The snow plow was traveling in the right lane when it started sliding into the left; the plow then began turning counterclockwise into the dirt shoulder where it flipped onto its right side. NHP urges motorists traveling in winter weather conditions over the holidays to slow down, turn on headlights, and always wear seatbelts.

Local volunteer a finalist for governor's award

WINNEMUCCA - Community activist Alaine Kliewer-Nye has been nominated for a Governor's Points of Light Award in the "rural individual volunteer" category for her work with nonprofits and community programs in Winnemucca.

Law enforcement radio channels going digital

WINNEMUCCA - Over the next few weeks, two-way radio channels used by local law enforcement agencies, EMS, and fire departments in Humboldt County will be changing from FM to digital in response to a federal mandate, according to a press release from communication center director Paul Burkholder.

Tri-County Drug Enforcement Team busts alleged meth trafficker

WINNEMUCCA - An investigation initiated by the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Team (TRIDENT) led to the Dec. 18 arrest of Veronica Abarca-Fregoso, 34, a suspected major source of supply of methamphetamine throughout the central region of rural Nevada, according to a news release from TRIDENT.

Sounds of the season

MICHAEL MICHAELSEN • Special to the Sun Holiday music was in the air Friday at the Pleasant Senior Center in Winnemucca during an evening concert arranged by the local Rotary club. The Swinging Seniors did festive renditions of a number of Christmas favorites for an appreciative and sizable crowd. They were joined by a quintet of musicians, who also entertained with holiday favorites and a few non-holiday tunes, such as the Beatles "When I'm 64." One of the quintet's members, Dave Munk, said the group formed in the spring of this year, and they don't have an official name yet. The players include Ed Andrews on Tuba, Dave Munk on the French horn, Mike Bumgartner on trumpet, Benjamin Munk on trombone and Joan Munk on flugelhorn.

Radon education program offered Jan. 16 in Winnemucca

Results show 27 percent of Humboldt County homes have elevated radon levels

WINNEMUCCA - January is National Radon Action Month and the Nevada Radon Education Program of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) will offer a free radon education program Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m., at the Humboldt County Cooperative Extension office, 1085 Fairgrounds Rd., in Winnemucca. Radon test kits will be offered free at the presentations, as well as throughout the month at Cooperative Extension locations around the state.
