(AP) — Federal wildlife officials have agreed to conduct a full, year-long review to determine whether a tiny snail found only in high-desert springs near a huge lithium mine being built along the Nevada-Oregon line should be listed as a threatened or endangered species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a finding published Thursday in the Federal Register that enough scientific exists to warrant the review sought by environmentalists who say that groundwater pumping required for the operation of the Thacker Pass mine could push the Kings River pyrg to the brink of extinction.
Nevada Outdoor School (NOS) takes students outdoors and teaches them how to respect the environment, recreate safely, and enjoy Nevada’s unique beauty. Just this month NOS received funds from the Nevada Outdoor Education and Recreation (NOER) grant program (through the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) for $25,800 to go towards their Nature in My World, Nature in the Park, and Nature Explorers programs, all geared towards youth in the community.

At their annual Board Retreat on Jan. 29, the Humboldt County Board of Commissioners discussed two of the most prominent projects that they worked on in 2023, unanimously deciding to move forward with design work for the WWTF but ultimately not coming to a substantive conclusion for the justice center project.

The Self-Care Senior Easter Baskets will be filled with things like toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, and other products that are a luxury item for many seniors living on a fixed income.
With significant population growth on the horizon, Nevada must support the critical energy demand. At the Humboldt County Board of Commissioners regular meeting on Feb. 5, Tallgrass Energy presented their Pinyon Pipeline project that will convert NV Energy’s North Valmy Generating Station, approximately 40 miles east of Winnemucca, from coal to natural gas by 2026.
The yurt on the trailhead in Water Canyon is a popular place for those that love Northern Nevada's great outdoors—hiking, biking, camping and more, but a recent fire has closed it for the remainder of the season. The Northern Nevada Recreation Coalition (NNRC) is a community organization comprised of volunteers that love recreation and are responsible for putting up and taking down the yurt each year.
Although the City of Winnemucca is still seeking the funds to construct a new municipal aquatics center, they are actively engaging in design services that will help realize the actual cost of construction and provide an accurate budget and model for the project. At their regular meeting on Jan. 23, the Winnemucca City Council approved $21,425 toward further geotechnical work at the anticipated site for the aquatics center, located on East Winnemucca near Lowry High School and the Splash Pad.
