Humboldt General among nation's most profitable small hospitals

WINNEMUCCA - Humboldt General Hospital is among the nation's most profitable small hospitals.That's according to a hospital cost report released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for December 2011. Modern Healthcare Magazine carried news of the rankings in its April 2011 issue.

Rotary Club conducts vision screenings for local students

WINNEMUCCA - Back in November 2007, Rotary Club of Winnemucca member and local Optometrist Dr. Cody Bengoa gave a presentation to the club concerning a variety of eye and vision topics. During the presentation, Dr. Bengoa described how he had performed vision screenings as a student and early in his career. Following the presentation, many fellow Rotarians suggested that the club develop a program to offer screenings to all of Humboldt County's students. Thus, the free Learning-Related Vision Screening program was developed.

Larsons celebrate 70th wedding anniversary

WINNEMUCCA - Elmer, 90, and Beatrice (Bea), 88, Larson celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary May 23 when they showed once again that they could still cut a rug.The first time they met was at a dance at the armory in Madison, S.D. Elmer and some friends had driven over from Wentworth, S.D., for the dance. After his first two friends had asked Bea to dance and struck out, Elmer decided to go for it.

Local scouts set out flags over Memorial Day weekend

Local Boy Scouts from Troop 223 and Cub Scouts Pack 77 set out flags at the Winnemucca Cemetery during the Memorial Day weekend to help earn their awards. It has been a tradition over the years for the scouts to put the flags out for veterans.

The gift of graduation

WINNEMUCCA - The last few weeks have been filled with high school graduations. My great-nephew received his diploma from a small town in Washington. When his sister graduated three years ago, just three of 32 students planned to attend a four-year university. Some had no plans while the majority had registered for a nearby community college. Of those students few have earned associate's degrees. In Kaare's class of 72 (biggest class ever!), the vast majority have been accepted at universities. It will be interesting to track this group to learn how many survive academia and graduate.
