Doug Mishler delivers his Ernie Pyle chautauqua presentation at the Pleasant Senior Center on Wednesday. Journalist Ernie Pyle covered World War II through the eyes of ordinary soldiers. His unpretentious pieces about their hardships and sacrifices received the attention of millions of readers, and in 1944 he won the Pulitzer Prize for his work. Pyle was killed by Japanese machine-gun fire in April 1945. Compilations of his war columns appear in "Here is Your War" (1943), "Brave Men" (1944) and "Last Chapter" (1946).
Hyland Wilkinson of the Lucky 7 Ranch competes in the saddle bronc event on March 4 in the Winnemucca Event Center during the Ranch Hand Rodeo. The 23rd annual event drew teams from all over the West who were competing for over $20,000 in prizes and enough bragging rights to last until the 2013 competition. The event kicked off on Feb. 29 with the Winnemucca Cow Dog Trial and Sale. Other events included a Ranch, Rope and Performance Horse Sale, Invitational Bull Sale, Stock Horse Competition, Western Trade Show and Kids' Dummy Roping and Stick Horse Barrels.
