Giving Tree for Seniors back for sixth year

WINNEMUCCA -The Humboldt Sun has a special tree in the office, full of names of needy senior citizens in our area - and it's ready for adoptions. Winnemucca Publishing General Manager Holly Rudy-James spearheaded the Giving Tree for Seniors project six years ago.

Holiday food drive now underway for Humboldt County's needy families

WINNEMUCCA - Local charity organizers are depending on the generosity of area residents to fill hundreds of food baskets this coming Christmas.The Winnemucca Ministerial Association officially launched its 2011 Christmas Food Basket food drive Monday, Nov. 28. The drive will continue through Friday, Dec. 16, at area schools, banks and businesses using the theme, "Harvest for the Hungry."

Changes to over-the-air TV channels in rural Humboldt County

WINNEMUCCA - Digital TV channels are now available in many rural areas of Humboldt County, and more will be coming in the near future. They can be received by most televisions made after 2006 and nearly all televisions purchased since 2009. Older TVs must be used with a digital set-top box.

Felony drug case amended to misdemeanor charges due to math error

WINNEMUCCA - A McDermitt man was found safe last week after a search and rescue team was dispatched on a report of him missing.

Poke & Peek to host Christmas drawing later this month

WINNEMUCCA - Later this month, two lucky shoppers will each win a bag full of surprises.The Poke & Peek Thrift Shop has announced a drawing for a large "Santa Bag" and a smaller "Elf Bag." That drawing will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14. Winners do not need to be present to win, but should pick up their prizes before Christmas.

Injury accident reported at Hanson and Fourth streets

WINNEMUCCA - The Winnemucca Police Department responded to an injury accident at the intersection of Hanson and Fourth streets on Nov. 30 at approximately 6:25 p.m.

FFMS hosts Veterans Day celebration

French Ford Middle School hosted its fifth Veterans Day celebration on Nov. 10. The guest speaker was retired USMC Col. Sam Routson, a local attorney. He spoke to the kids about service to country.

Busy holiday weekend in Humboldt County

Judges sentence Bobby Garza, Robert Hoolahan; competency hearing for Nerio Ceballos

WINNEMUCCA - Bobby Eric Garza appeared for sentencing on the charge conspiracy to commit larceny from a person not amounting to robbery, a gross misdemeanor, on Dec. 5. Judge Richard Wagner sentenced Garza to 12 months in the Humboldt County Detention Center with 148 days credit for time served.
