WINNEMUCCA - Humboldt General Hospital has been caring for northern Nevada's mothers and their newborns for more than 100 years.
WINNEMUCCA - This past October Lowry's Leadership class got the opportunity to go to the Northern Nevada Regional Conference in Spring Creek. The theme was a reality TV show theme, "Making Leadership a Reality." The conference consisted of workshops given by high school leadership students, a motivational speaker, JC Groups which are small groups some of which were led by some of Lowry's Leadership students, and lunch were we had a Hunger Relief demonstration.
WINNEMUCCA - Gage Chambers is a freshman at Lowry High School. He was nominated for Student of The Month by Alexis Mattson because he always comes to class prepared, is in his seat and working before the bell rings. His grades show that his hard work has paid off. He always has a positive attitude and a smile on his face.
WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County School District (HCSD) Transition Programs has received a Medicaid Infrastructure Grant to host a week long After School Work Camp for students with disabilities. The camp will run from Nov. 28 - Dec. 3. Through this week long employment camp, students will experience a variety of employment responsibilities in a competitive employment position such as getting to work in a timely manner, transportation issues and potential solutions for our rural area, tracking work time, on the job expectations, possible supports and assistive technology each individual may need, and the specific skills needed for successful employment in their career interest.
WINNEMUCCA - Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services continues to sponsor the Winnemucca Survivors Support Group. The group is open to women aged 18 and older who are survivors of any form of abuse or violence.
J. CARMEN KOFOED • It wasn't clear if they were just passing through or finding a new home - but two chukars found their way into the Kofoed's back yard last week. The chortling duo sat on the hedge chewing leaves and winter berries for a few hours, once in awhile checking out the curious cats and wondering about the click-click-click sound of the camera shutter.
WINNEMUCCA - The Nevada Supreme Court recently released their report on rural district court judges' travel for the years 2007 through 2010. In order for people in rural communities to receive quick and reliable access to the judicial system, the judges in those districts do a lot of traveling weekly.
WINNEMUCCA - Humboldt General Hospital Emergency Medical Services Rescue recently released the 2011 Burning Man after Action Report. An important aspect of the endeavor, of course, was the financial bottom line. According to the report, the budget and actual outcome were pretty much spot on.
WINNEMUCCA - Judge Richard Wagner presided over a number of criminal cases on the law and motion calendar for Nov. 21.
WINNEMUCCA - According to a Winnemucca Police Department press release, Zachary Formby, 25, a resident of Winnemucca, resigned his position as a Winnemucca police officer effective Nov. 23 following convictions on three counts of domestic battery by the Union Township Justice Court.
WINNEMUCCA - Zachary J. Formby, who was charged with four counts of domestic battery, was found guilty on three counts with the fourth count dismissed in Union Township Justice Court on Nov. 18. Senior Justice of the Peace Edward Dannan presided over the trial, Formby was represented by Attorney Robert Dolan and the State was represented by Deputy District Attorney Roger Whomes.
WINNEMUCCA - The Torch Chapter of National Honor Society welcomed new members on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the annual induction ceremony.
WINNEMUCCA - The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) is holding a public hearing Thursday on its draft permit for the proposed Jungo Landfill.
WINNEMUCCA - Experts estimate that a woman is abused behind closed doors, in her home, every 9 seconds. Physical violence is the most visible, but is only part of the story. Verbal and sexual abuses are often the most permanently damaging, and verbal abuse is the most prevalent form of domestic violence. Formerly battered women often reflect this when they say, "I could no longer think for myself." Women in violent relationships feel trapped by their batterer's violence and verbal threats. Leaving the situation could result in serious injury and/or death for themselves and their family members, poverty and the possibility of losing custody of their children.
A community blood drive was held Nov. 15 - 16 at the Winnemucca Convention Center. The Humboldt County Cattlewomen served hamburger sliders to all donors as part of their "Beef up the Blood Supply" campaign. The community blood drive is sponsored by the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary and United Blood Services of Reno.
