Kalani Rodriguez claimed the top spot in the annual Doc Verner Memorial junior golf tournament on Wednesday, July 24, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course with a round of 104.

Severe weather adds to increased fire activity

The Winnemucca Rural Fire District has experienced a significant increase in fire-related incidents in 2024, surpassing the total number of calls from each of the previous two years. Fire Chief Torrey Sheen reported that there have been 67 fire calls so far this year (as of July 25), a notable rise from the 57 calls recorded in the entirety of 2023 and similar figures in 2022. Fire calls in July (26 runs as of July 27th) have set a montly record for the department.

Active Parenting program offers guidance for raising teenagers

Parenting adolescents in today's overwhelming world can be a significant challenge, with many parents struggling to navigate their children through the complexities young adulthood. Teens are dealing with adult issues earlier and earlier in life, including confrontations with drugs, sexuality, and violence. To support parents in shepherding their teenagers, a new series of classes, Active Parenting of Teens, is being offered at the Cooperative Extension Office on E. Fairgrounds Road.

Winnemucca Police looking for information related to assault at train station that resulted in a death

On the evening of Wednesday, July 10, Officers from the Winnemucca Police Department responded to the Amtrak station on West Railroad Street for a medical assist. After arriving on scene, Officers located a man, Michael McClure of Caldwell, Idaho, laying on the train platform unconscious. Witnesses told Officers that he had been pushed down by another male who was waiting for the train to arrive. Officers located the male, Jacob Pendleton of Cincinnati, Ohio, and questioned him.

Homeschool families invited to discuss college preparation

Homeschool families and those considering homeschooling are invited to join an informative session addressing key questions about the transition from homeschool to college. The event, slated for Tuesday, July 30 at 6 p.m., will cover essential topics such as whether to graduate a child from an accredited program or a personal homeschool curriculum, and the implications of each choice for college admissions and financial aid. The meeting will take place in the main building in room 108.

Humboldt County Sheriff's Office to host National Night Out event

Humboldt County Sheriff's Office is set to host National Night Out, a nationwide event dedicated to crime prevention, drug prevention, and community safety. Scheduled to take place on Aug. 6, the event will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Whitworth Recreation Complex, adjacent to the Boys & Girls Club of Winnemucca.

Wildfire near Denio spreads to nearly 20,000 acres

DENIO, NV — A wildfire, referred to as the Wilder Fire, broke out near Denio, Nev., on July 7 at 11:23 a.m. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) mobilized firefighting resources to contain the blaze, which has rapidly spread due to dry conditions and strong winds.

Record heat blazes into Winnemucca

If you are a fan of summer and heat, Winnemucca has been the place for you in July. A heatwave hit the west coast and northern Nevada, raising temperature over 100 degrees for nine straight days in Winnemucca. The National Weather Service in Elko reported that Winnemucca was 105 degrees or higher for seven straight days (July 7-13.) That broke the previous record four days, set from July 10-13.

Humboldt County and the 95-80 Regional Development Authority are hosting an EPA Brownfields Grant Community Meeting on Wednesday, July 24 at 6 p.m. at the Winnemucca Convention Center – East Hall, 50 W Winnemucca Blvd, Winnemucca, NV.

Commission tables height variance request for transloading facility pending FAA review

After securing a lease with the City of Winnemucca for a 177.3-acre parcel to the west of the Winnemucca Municipal Airport to serve as a future transloading facility for the Thacker Pass site, Lithium Americas is hoping to begin construction of the facility as soon as possible, according to Lithium Americas Vice President of Government & Community Relations Tim Crowley. Their request for a variance to increase the allowed height of structures from 35 feet to 137 feet for silos to be constructed on the parcel was tabled by the Humboldt County Board of Commissioners pending review from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Rural fire dept introduces Flash the Firedog

The Winnemucca Rural Fire District (WRFD) introduced their new mascot, Flash the Firedog, during the 44th annual Basque Festival on June 8. Flash was adopted by the WRFD after he lost everything in a tragic fire when he was just a pup. Now, Flash is working to help the WFRD to spread awareness and education about fire safety, especially to youth.

LHS honors 229 seniors during graduation ceremony

With bittersweet excitement in the air the Lowry High School (LHS) class of 2024 met for the final time as high school students to celebrate their graduation on June 7, with 243 seniors graduating and 229 seniors walking during the ceremony. “Graduation is a culmination of years of hard work,” said LHS Principal Shaun Taylor during his opening speech.

McDermitt Combined School graduates eight seniors

For one of the final times, the group of eight graduates at McDermitt Combined School gathered for one of the most important days of their lives. In front of large crowd of family and friends, McDermitt Combined held its graduation ceremony on Wednesday, June 5. Even though there were eight students on the stage, a ninth was also honored. Quinn McKee was part of the class but tragically died in 2022.

Commission approves final budget for next fiscal year

Although Humboldt County is characterized as fiscally responsible, the final budget for fiscal year 2024-25, approved at a regular meeting of the Humboldt County Board of Commissioners on May 20 (with all members present), revealed that expenditures are set to exceed revenues for the next year.
