Great Basin Arts & Entertainment will host Nevada Poet Laureate Shaun Griffin at the Martin Hotel in Winnemucca for an intimate evening of poetry and conversation on Oct. 24 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Griffin, a celebrated author and advocate, will share selections from his new work and reflect on his extensive career engaging with Nevada communities.

The Winnemucca Witchy Market is holding its inaugural Witches' Ball on Oct. 26 at the Lazy P Farm in celebration of “all things magical, mystical, and mysterious!” All are welcome to this gathering of artisans, healers, and practitioners in recognition of Samhain, or the Witches’ New Year, no matter the person’s background. Organizers Angie Van Drielen and Sierra Rose Cripps said the Witchy Market is slated to open at 10 a.m. at the Lazy P Farm, with a full day of enchanting attractions, such as Witchy Workshops, Spell Swap Meet, and activities for all the Little Monsters! Starting at 3 p.m., there will be trick or treating, scavenger hunts, pumpkin painting, rides, storytelling, and s’mores! The children won’t be the only monsters on the farm, though — Lazy P’s Farm of Terror haunted house will be open from 6:30 p.m. – 11 p.m. for those with the guts to wander through the frightful experience.

Humboldt County Composite Squadron 68 of Winnemucca Nevada hosted an Orientation flight day on Aug. 10 and took local cadets and even some from Elko Nevada for their first flight in a small powered plane. All of the cadets got to go through preflight and learn about what it takes to inspect the aircraft before flight and make sure it is safe to fly, as well as being in the cockpit learning about the instruments (gauges) and levers.

It’s not too often that Winnemucca’s Mario Bautista gets to fight close to home as part of his UFC career. The Lowry High School graduate gets the rare chance to do that, as he is part of the UFC 307 fight card set for Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. “It will be nice to fight close to home,” Bautista said. “The closest that I fought is probably Vegas. It gives family and friends the chance to make it out here to see me fight, which is nice.”

(RENO, Nev.) – The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) has elected Judge Michael Montero of the Sixth Judicial District in Humboldt County, Nevada to its Board of Directors. Judge Montero is the only judge presiding over the Sixth Judicial District of Nevada, where his caseload is composed of every civil and criminal case that originates in or proceeds to the District Court level in Humboldt County. “As a judge, I have a profound responsibility to lead with integrity, ensuring my work makes a meaningful impact on the lives of the children and families we serve,” said Judge Montero. “I am looking forward to contributing to the NCJFCJ Board of Directors and honored to bring my experience and passion to furthering the NCJFCJ’s mission.”
On Sept. 4, Humboldt General Hospital EMS-Rescue conducted a critical school bus extrication training, emphasizing the importance of preparation and teamwork in emergency response. Led by instructor Ken Whittaker, the training provided EMS personnel with hands-on experience using specialized tools in complex scenarios, such as a bus accident.
Windy conditions and rough terrain complicated efforts to quickly contain a wildfire that broke out on Tuesday, Aug. 20 near the Rose Creek exit (mm 165) outside of Winnemucca.
