Increase in influenza in Churchill County

Carson City - As of the last week in November of 2014, a large increase of influenza (flu) has occurred in Churchill County. According to the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Churchill County has experienced 61 cases of influenza in this flu season, almost all occurring within a two week period. Churchill County has not experienced such a large influx of influenza cases in such a short period of time since 2009.

BLM closes Black Rock Station for winter

WINNEMUCCA - The Black Rock Station Visitor Center, located at 200 Transfer Rd. in Gerlach, Nev., closed for the winter season Nov. 24 and is scheduled to reopen in May 2015.

Man sought in wife's death found dead in Nevada

ELY, Nev. (AP) - A sheriff in rural eastern Nevada says a 63-year-old man who had been sought in the shooting death of his wife and torching of their home was found dead in his pickup truck on a dirt road in a remote mountain pass.

'Now more than ever'

The Humboldt County Library presents "Now More Than Ever," featuring artwork by Kerri Augenstein, Kitty Norcutt, Joce Rossi, Mckenzie Swecker, and Teddy Swecker. All of the work is based on catching the feeling of one moment. An Art Reception will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 17, from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the meeting room of the Humboldt County Library. Many little voices create harmony

The schoolchildren at Winnemucca Grammar School filed into the gym and sat in a semi-circle on the floor, surrounding the Christmas tree and piano that stood in the center of the room. Parents and grandparents filled the bleachers, and younger siblings darted from mom's grip and then back again. Teachers wore their Christmas sweaters, some even with their own lighting.

Seasonal layoffs drive initial claims higher

CARSON CITY - In November, 16,389 initial claims for unemployment insurance were filed in Nevada, up from October when they were at 14,124, and up 12 percent from November 2013 when there were 14,673 initial claims.

CARSON CITY - On Wednesday, Dec. 17, Gov. Brian Sandoval traveled to Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park - Spooner Lake to be the first visitor to a Nevada State Park to have his park passport stamped, officially launching the new program.

Holiday cosumer survey: Americans will spend less this year than last

81 percent say they will spend less than $1,000

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A new Vox Populi Polling holiday consumer survey found that 43 percent of Americans plan to spend less this year on Christmas gifts. According to the survey, 22 percent said they plan to spend more and 35 percent said about the same. Among those surveyed, 81 percent say they will spend less than $1,000, 56 percent say they will spend less than $500 and 30 percent say they will spend less than $250.

Kaia Fit runs for Christmas charity

Kaia Fit hosted a one-mile/5K race on Saturday, Dec. 20 to raise "Christmas Dinner" funds for needy families.
