Taxable sales increase statewide

Lander and Pershing also up, Humboldt County down

Taxable sales showed a modest increase statewide for the month of September (the most recent month for which sales tax collections are available). Eleven of Nevada's 17 counties recorded an increase in taxable sales for Sept. 2014. The 4 percent increase statewide wasn't enough to equal Economic Forum projections which forecast an additional $2.35 million for the fiscal year, which began in July.

Humboldt County commissioners will meet Monday, Dec. 15 starting at 9:30 a.m. The public has an opportunity to address the commission on any matter not appearing on the agenda at the beginning of the meeting, followed by approval of the minutes for several past meetings, and the administrative report.

Weight-loss group donates to families in need

The local TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) club raised enough money to purchase 43 bags of groceries destined for the Winnemucca Food Bank. TOPS members contributed $421 to Raley's Food for Families holiday food drive, and TOPS members Marie Bidart and Alice Brinkerhoff presented store director Russ McBroome with a check on Tuesday morning.

Annual day of recognition honors veterans

Each year, the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery (NNVMC) participates in "Wreaths Across America" a nationwide day of recognition for past veterans through the placement of Christmas wreaths at gravesites. Wreaths Across America was developed on the idea to "Remember, Honor, Teach," by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies on a day in December in all 50 states and beyond and other countries.

First enterovirus D68 case confirmed in Nevada

CARSON CITY - The United States has been experiencing a nationwide outbreak of enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) associated with severe respiratory illness. From mid-August to Dec. 4, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or state public health laboratories have confirmed a total of 1,121 people in 47 states and the District of Columbia with respiratory illness caused by EV-D68. The CDC just notified the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health that the first case in Nevada has been confirmed. The case is located in Washoe County.

Elevating questions

I am a proponent of (limited) competency testing at each grade level with the specification that there are certain concepts that students must know and understand before they move to the next grade or course. With proficiency in hand, students are equipped to meet the new challenges and education demands. These required concepts are drawn from the Common Core Standards for English (reading/writing), math and science. The English and science standards figure appropriately into grade level expectations. Just as a first grader can relate the main idea of a simple story, a senior has mastered the same skill applying it to complex text with justification to support reasoning.

Two local authors to sign books

Christine Baker, a self-described introvert, has a lot to say - about her writing. Baker has written since she was a Winnemucca Junior High School Warrior, but she just recently had a short story published in an anthology.

Ninety-three percent of WDVS primary victims are female, 3 percent are male and 1 percent is LGBTQIA. However, domestic violence happens in several dynamics, it can also be a woman against a man; homosexual, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQIA) couples.

State agencies zeroing in on impaired drivers

Nationwide, approximately 10,000 motorists are killed in alcohol-related crashes annually, a figure that amounts to the number of seats on about 100 mid-sized jetliners. An impaired driving enforcement effort to reduce that number will take place through Jan. 5.

New standard mileage rates available

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service today issued the 2015 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.

New insurance protection available in Nevada

DAVIS, Calif. - USDA's Risk Management Agency (RMA) announced that the new Whole-Farm Revenue Protection insurance policy is now available for the 2015 crop year in all Nevada counties.
