WASHINGTON - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced a new report showing that as the cost of fighting forest fires has rapidly increased over the last 20 years, the budgets for other forest programs, including those that can help prevent and mitigate fire damage, have substantially shrunk. The Forest Service's firefighting appropriation has rapidly risen as a proportion of the Forest Service's overall budget, increasing from 16 percent in 1995 to 42 percent today, forcing cuts in other budget areas.

Humboldt Volunteer Hospice (HVH) has held its "Lasting Lights of Love" tree-lighting memorial ceremony on Nixon lawn for the past three years. However, the December date of the ceremony last year coincided with one of the largest snowfalls in Winnemucca. HVH director Sherry Smith said so much snow fell it was almost impossible to proceed with the outdoor ceremony, which included reading memorial names, lighting the tree, a moment of silence, prayer by a local pastor, and Christmas Carol singing.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is encouraging producers who have suffered eligible disaster-related losses to act to secure assistance by Sept. 30, 2014, as congressionally mandated payment reductions will take place for producers who have not acted before that date. Livestock producers that have experienced grazing losses since October 2011 and may be eligible for benefits but have not yet contacted their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office should do so as soon as possible.
CARSON CITY - Gov. Brian Sandoval proclaimed September as National Preparedness Month in Nevada. The Nevada Division of Emergency Management/Homeland Security (NDEM), and the Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH) urges Nevadans to prepare for an emergency that would require self-reliance for three days without utilities and electricity, water service, access to a supermarket or local services, household medical needs, and possibly without response from police, fire or rescue.

It was April of 1912 when the two oldest of five Achabal brothers, Segundo and Fermin, came from Viscaya, Spain and settled on a ranch In Malheur County Oregon, 15 miles north of McDermitt, Nevada. Eventually it was up to the two only surviving brothers, Ygnacio and Cleto, to operate the family ranch. The Achabal Bros Ranch, today known as the Etchart Ranch, has now been in the same family for 102 years.
A driver using a cell phone hit and injured a pedestrian crossing Winnemucca Boulevard on Tuesday evening. According to witnesses, a woman was pushing a stroller across Winnemucca Boulevard at about 6:30 p.m. when she was hit by a black sedan driven by Kandylaria Jensen, 23. Jensen was attempting to make a left turn from Hanson Street onto Winnemucca Boulevard. Witnesses said Jensen was using her cell phone at the time the accident occurred.
A local dystonia advocate, Lynn Williams, hopes her dystonia awareness challenge will become as viral as the ALS ice bucket challenge. The dystonia challenge dares people to bite into a lemon and record the moment, and then donate at least five dollars to the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF).
Soup and sandwiches will be served next week at the Pleasant Senior Center while updates to the kitchen continue. The dining room at the center has been closed since Aug. 15, and will re-open with limited seating and a limited menu on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Assorted soups and sandwiches will be served daily.
