RENO - With Nevada's climate, more farmers are looking for ways to extend the growing season. University of Nevada, Reno's High Desert Farming Initiative is offering a class for Nevada's agricultural producers, "The Business of Season Extension Farming," to provide information on field-tested methods for extending the growing season, as well information on reducing risk, low-cost marketing and financial planning. The course will be 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Sept. 12 at the Nye County Cooperative Extension office in Pahrump.
Local author Curtiss Kull wrote his first book about Sheriff S. Graham Lamb, the longest-serving sheriff in Humboldt County, which was recently published. Kull said he identified with Sheriff Lamb in that they shared a strong commitment to their wives, and have an affinity for wearing vests. But the quality they have the most in common is their work as lawmen. Kull is not just a writer, he is the Humboldt County Undersheriff.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Carson City District Office, the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest (USFS), U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), and the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) announce the lifting of fire restrictions that have been in place since May 30, 2014. Restrictions will expire at 12:01 a.m., Tuesday morning, Sept. 2.

Alicia Louise Cipicchio, a 29-year-old resident of Jackson, Wyo., suffered fatal injuries early Thursday morning after falling under a large vehicle at the annual Burning Man event in the Black Rock Desert in Northern Nevada.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) announced tthat the reservoir at South Fork State Recreation Area has tested positive for quagga mussel DNA. No adult quagga mussels or veligers (larval stage quagga) were found in that waterway. The reservoir is not considered infested at this time; however NDOW and the Nevada Division of State Parks (NDSP) are implementing immediate strategies to limit any potential of quagga mussels spreading from South Fork to other locations.

Tyler Turnipseed was named Chief Game Warden for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) Monday. He is only the fifth Chief Game Warden in NDOW's history, a position that oversees all game wardens in Nevada. Game wardens enforce wildlife and boating safety laws across the state, in rural areas and on Nevada's waterways.

Sumin has been an active member of the Order for 75 years, first in Mountain Star Chapter in Battle Mountain and later in Silver State Chapter in Winnemucca. She was presented her 75 year pin by Michael Giles, Worthy Patron of Silver State Chapter, in thanks for her years of service to and membership in the Order. RENO - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced that starting Sept. 2, farmers can enroll in the new dairy Margin Protection Program. The voluntary program, established by the 2014 Farm Bill, provides financial assistance to participating farmers when the margin - the difference between the price of milk and feed costs - falls below the coverage level selected by the farmer.

The number of employers in Nevada has increased to 59,900, showing considerable improvement since the recession. That represents a gain of 2,400 from a year ago and translates to a 4.1 percent increase, the strongest since the final three months of 2007, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR). Available information suggests that about half of the growth in the number of employers over the past year is accounted for by two industries-professional/business services and trade/transportation/utilities.
