Gas prices tumble down -

Nevada state at $3.78 - 11 cent drop in one month

LAS VEGAS - With Nevada pumps pricing falling daily, the Silver State residents are on a roll and hitting the road during the end of summer travel season, Today's state average price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline is $3.78. All metro areas are moving downward with the most significant decrease registering in Sparks, at $3.86, a -$0.14 decrease since AAA last fuel gauge report on July 8.

Great Basin challenge offers rodeo competition for younger set

While the new Bulls & Broncs events will offer heated competition for the older set, younger buckaroos will have their shot in the arena too.

Jiggs Reservoir to receive much needed attention

For nearly five years Jiggs Reservoir, approximately 30 miles south of Elko, has been a reservoir in name only with no water to speak of. However, the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management, Elko County, Barrick, Newmont and private landowners is now in the process of improving this once popular reservoir and dam so that it will once again hold water.

Dead body found in Kingston Pond

No foul play suspected

The body of a deceased male in his late 60s was found face down in Kingston Pond Aug. 13 by a nearby resident, said Becky Johnson, deputy coroner for the Lander County Sheriff's Office.

BLM urges caution when traveling on public lands

ELKO - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Elko District Office is urging the public to take extra caution when traveling on public lands due to the recent storms that have brought heavy rains to the area.

Fire, Fire!!!

STEPHANIE MORTON • The Humboldt SunThree engines from the Winnemucca Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire in the 1100 block of Cinnabar Street in the Winnemucca Indian Colony at 1:40 p.m. on Wednesday. Chief Alan Olsen of the WFD said crews arrived at 1:45 p.m. and found a small camper engulfed behind the residence. The fire was extinguished and the cause is pending investigation. There were no injuries reported, and other than the trailer, no further damage was reported. Winnemucca police also responded to assist the Bureau of Indian Affairs in its investigation. Representatives of the Bureau of Indian Affairs had no comment.

Newmont funding shores up local hospice organization

The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice said it would be hard-pressed to provide services to this community's terminally and chronically ill patients without help from Newmont Mining Corporation's "Legacy Fund."

USDA: funding available for rural homebuyers

CARSON CITY - USDA Rural Development has announced that extra funding is available this summer to help rural homebuyers purchase a home.

The Humboldt Sun is available free to teachers as part of Newspapers in Education

When school is in and the latest edition of The Humboldt Sun is out, students in Humboldt County classrooms are reading about local government, sports, events and issues in their hometown newspaper through the Newspapers in Education (NIE) program. The NIE program, supported by Winnemucca Publishing, provides newspapers to area teachers to incorporate into their lesson plans.

Humboldt County's original baby boomers returned to Winnemucca Aug. 15-17 to celebrate each other, remember departed classmates and honor the community that gave them an energetic, supportive start to life. To say the reunion attendees had a good time would be an extreme understatement.

Winnemucca hosts Motocross Triple Crown race

First for local motocross club

It's a "first" for the Winnemucca Motocross Club, hosting the Sierra Motocross Racing Association Winnemucca Triple Crown Race. The first two races will be held this weekend, Aug. 29 - 31 and 31 at the Winnemucca motocross track five miles out on Jungo Road. The third race in the series will be held the weekend of Oct. 10 - 12.

Sale of third sesquicentennial medallion ends today, Aug. 26

CARSON CITY - Sales of the third Nevada Sesquicentennial medallion will end Aug. 26, 2014 at 5 p.m. The medallion is the third in the series of four being produced throughout the year.
