Planning Commission to meet Thursday

WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County Regional Planning Commission will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the courthouse meeting room.

'Scooby Doo and the Trick or Treat Thief'

Celebrate Halloween early this year with Scooby Doo and the gang as they try to solve the mystery of who is stealing all the children's trick-or-treat bags. The meddling kids are live on stage at Lowry High School for the first play of the school year. Performances at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 - 19. Doors open for seating at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 per adult; $3 for students and $1 for the youngsters. Feel free to dress up in your favorite Halloween costume!

Founder of Nevada Paranormal Institute discusses ghosts

WINNEMUCCA - Ghosts are seen every day. Reality shows like "Paranormal State," "Ghost Hunters International" and "The Haunted" feature ghost hunters seeking the truth behind reported tales of spirit activity. "My Ghost Story" and "Celebrity Ghost Stories" provide a forum for individuals to share their experiences with the supernatural.

City council meets Tuesday

WINNEMUCCA - The Winnemucca City Council will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. at city hall. Items on the agenda include a request for "No Truck Parking This Block" signage on Garrison Street between the boulevard and West Second Street; an ordinance introduction/rezone application for a property at the corner of Offenhauser and Great Basin Drive; HDA board appointment; request for partial street abandonment for a portion of Pershing Street; an update on the sewer main rehabilitation project and update of the street light retrofit project. Staff and council reports will follow, as well as public comment.

Local 4-H shooting sports youth travel to Carson City for State 4-H Shooting Sports Match

WINNEMUCCA - On Sept. 17, 10 4-H youth from the Paradise Valley 4-H Shooting Sports Club traveled to Carson City to compete in the 2011 State 4-H Shooting Match. The youth worked hard all summer to qualify in their respective shooting disciplines so they could make the trip to Carson City and compete. There were over 90 youth from around the State of Nevada competing at the State 4-H Shooting Sports Match.

Violence against Men: It is more prevalent than we think

WINNEMUCCA - Mark and Valerie had just left a movie theatre. Hand in hand, they strolled toward their car and suddenly heard shouting and screaming. They stopped walking. The mall parking lot was well lit. They listened, scanned the area but did not see nor hear anyone.

Commissioners will meet Monday

WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County Commissioners will be holding their regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 17 at 9:30 a.m. in the meeting room of the courthouse.

Public invited to view hot air balloons, enjoy barbecue

WINNEMUCCA - The public is invited to a barbecue on Sunday to celebrate the wedding of Jeremy Crosby and Szabina Somers.

HDA special meeting Monday

WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt Development Authority will be holding a special meeting on Monday, Oct. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at the West Hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center where they will visit with the newly-appointed interim executive director of the Nevada Office of Economic Development, Steve D. Hill. A majority of the board may be present at the meeting. There will be an opportunity for public comment.

Changes afoot at Humboldt Museum New director, event coordinator revamping offerings

WINNEMUCCA - It's a new day at the Humboldt Museum. Belinda Bell, recently brought on board as Event Coordinator and Manager of the museum's thrift store, works on a display for the soon-to-be reopened building. Located in a historic building on the museum grounds, "The Trunk" is the museum's main source of income, and Bell - an artist in her own right - is putting her design skills to work to create a unique shopping experience for locals and travelers alike.

Landfill committee meets Monday

WINNEMUCCA - The Landfill Committee will hold their next meeting on Monday, Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the courthouse. Items on the agenda include approval of previous meeting minutes; landfill quarterly recycling report; request from Humboldt County for a waiver of dumping fees for demolition of the county-owned building on the southeast corner of Fourth and Baud; request from landfill billings adjustments/write-offs by the comptroller's office; miscellaneous related matters.

Paradise Valley hosts Fire Department Rodeo and Fun Day

PARADISE VALLEY - Once again the Paradise Valley Firemen kicked off another successful Rodeo held Sept. 17 - 18 at the Bell Ranch Arena in Paradise Valley. Woodie and Lilla Bell have graciously held the PVF Rodeo for the firemen annually for over 20 years. This in turn has enabled the firemen to uphold the rodeo tradition in the Paradise Valley and has become a much anticipated event for old and young alike.

Reading honors -

Winnemucca Grammar School hosted a kick-off party for its reading awards program on Sept. 27. Medals are awarded throughout the year for independent reading. Students read for 15 minutes to receive a step. They receive a medal for 100 steps, which is 25 hours of independent reading time, 200 steps (50 hours) and 300 steps (75 hours). The ultimate goal is 400 steps, which is 100 hours of reading time, for each student of the school. Lowry High School football captains and cheerleaders and Smokey Bear were also on hand for the event.
