DRI researchers discover new type of soot particle from wildfire emissions

RENO - Every year, wildfires clear millions of hectares of land and emit around 34-percent of global soot mass into the atmosphere. In certain regions, such as Southeast Asia and Russia, these fires can contribute as much as 63-percent of regional soot mass.

Just 10 or 15 years ago we witnessed various campaigns to get families to turn off the television and find other forms of recreation. Schools had "No TV Challenges" and networks encouraged educational and informative programming for children. While television itself is innocent -it is simply an electronic device -we recognized that uncontrolled viewing is detrimental to socialization, physical activity, and brain activation. Since commercials drive me crazy, I avoid much television but I do watch news, sports, and a few other shows. I have nothing against a few hours of viewing. It is the "mesmerization of minds" that I fear.

Hauling freight into East Rochester -

Lehman drives a team of horses and hauls freight into East Rochester, a mining camp located near the present-day Coeur Rochester Mine. Lehman was about 25 years old in photograph, which is actually a copy of a postcard. The cancellation mark, though faint, is visible at the top of the photo. The trademark of Lehman Freighting was a single gray lead horse on the right side of the team. Joan Austin of Winnemucca is the granddaughter of Charles Lehman. She is married to Roger Austin, who provided the information about the photograph.

University professor wins International Latino Book Award for a second time

RENO - Emma Sepulveda, a writer, University of Nevada, Reno professor and director of the university's Latino Research Center, won an International Latino Book Award given by Latino Literacy Now at their annual ceremony, which took place this year in Las Vegas, June 28.

BLM seeking comments on Steamboat Geothermal Project

CARSON CITY - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Carson City District, Stillwater Field Office, has completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Steamboat Geothermal Well(s) 16-32 Project proposed by Ormat Nevada Inc. The public is invited to submit comments through August 11.
