Nevada gets an 'F' in help for working parents

CARSON CITY - Nevada gets an "F" in a new report analyzing how each state supports - or doesn't support - new parents and families, with policies that encourage paid time off and job protection when people have to take a leave for parenting or care-giving.

Koyotes kruise into Winnemucca for annual show and shine

On Saturday, June 21, the Koyote Kruisers held their 19th "Show and Shine" event at Vesco City Park. One hundred eighteen beautiful classic and special interest vehicles were on display for people to enjoy. The Koyote Kruisers would like to thank everyone who came out and spent part of their day with us. Following is a list of trophy winners from the show:

Woman arrested after allegedly striking man with vehicle

A woman was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery with substantial bodily harm and battery with a deadly weapon on June 19 after allegedly striking a male victim with a small pick-up truck.

Fire restrictions in western Nevada have expanded

Tinder-dry vegetation, exceptional drought conditions, increasing daytime temperatures and several human-caused fires have prompted the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District Office, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the Nevada Division of Forestry's (NDF) have implemented fire restrictions on all lands under their jurisdiction in western Nevada effective June 30 and lasting until further notice.

School boards across state ask for more education funding

A resolution is being circulated among all 17 of Nevada's school districts asking the state to provide more funding for K-12 education; that resolution was signed by Humboldt County school board members at last Tuesday's meeting.

In every school district throughout the state of Nevada, boards of school trustees and superintendents are united in their concern over the inadequate funding of public education.

Humboldt General Hospital accepts site-prep bid

Single bidder a 'first class company'

Humboldt General Hospital accepted a bid for the site preparation work necessary for locating a modular medical office building across Haskell Street from the rear of the hospital. That building will need to be in place, up and running, before the medical office building at the corner of Haskell and Minor Streets can be torn down to make way for the expansion of Harmony Manor for a memory care facility.

Nevada 150 sesquicentennial belt buckles debut at Reno Rodeo

In commemoration of Nevada's 150th birthday, Sesquicentennial belt buckles made their debut at the 95th Reno Rodeo from June 19-28.

City's Day Camp the answer for bored kids

Activities, friends, every day is different

"There are still kids, parents, and grandparents in Winnemucca who don't know about Day Camp!" lamented Marielena Connell who's been presiding over summertime activities for local kids for 16 years. However, Connell noted, the first of July is perfect for getting involved in day camp because by summer's second month, boredom may be setting in.

BLM temporarily halts wild horse gather

Mustangs given time to accept trap corral

On Friday, local BLM officials temporarily suspended a 30-day wild horse trap operation initiated June 23 east of Oreana. The gather is on hold until Monday, July 7 giving mustangs time to accept the gated corral surrounding a man-made watering hole fed by discharge from a municipal ground water well.
