Dames N Design Gala

COURTESY PHOTOThe Winnemucca Downtown Business Association held their first ever Dames N Design Gala along with the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice on May 10. The 240-plus attendees were treated to drinks, music, a fashion show and raffle. The event was held to celebrate all women, said DBA Vice President Jacy Jackson, and this year honored one in particular: Mimi Drake, who organizers described as a pioneer in business for over 49 years. Drake's granddaughters and great-granddaughters were able to attend the event. Above, fashion models showed off local fare. Wildlife board sets big game tag quotas

The Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners recently set big game tag quotas for the 2014 hunting season, which included increases in elk, desert bighorn and mountain goat. Tag quotas were also established for several new hunts including spike elk and bighorn ewe hunts.

Montero judges state competition

Sixth Judicial Court Judge Michael Montero helps Winnemucca fifth graders in Mrs. Darlington's class during their "We the People" unit, and he has been involved with judging We the People competition for Reno and Carson City high schools for several years.

Intersection construction begins -

JESSICA POWELL • The Humboldt SunConstruction has begun on the city's downtown Winnemucca Boulevard/Melarkey Street intersection. The construction started on the corner across from Winner's and the log has also been rotated to face the intersection more directly. The project is expected to take about two months to complete and is intended to spruce up one of the main entrances into town.

CARSON CITY - Nevada ranks near the bottom nationally for enrollment and funding of early-childhood education, according to the latest "State of Preschool" report from the National Institute for Early Education Research at Rutgers University.

Sonoma Heights getting drop-off lane next year

Parents of Sonoma Heights Elementary School students will have a new option for dropping off students in the mornings next year; the city council has approved a drop-off lane on the Aiken Street side of the school.

Nevada $529 College Savings Day Contest announced

CARSON CITY - State Treasurer Kate Marshall announced that her office and the Nevada College Savings Board is sponsoring the sixth annual Nevada $529 College Savings Day Contest, which is open to Nevada residents with children age 13 or younger. Twelve students will receive a prize of a $529 gift to be used to open an SSgA Upromise 529 Plan (the "Plan") college savings plan account, or to enhance an existing Nevada College Savings Plan account.

Lowry students finish third in auto skills competition

Lowry High School students Philip Kienholz and Jose Mendoza finished third at the Nevada Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Student Competition Thursday in Sparks. Together, they were awarded over $25,000 in scholarships and tools.

Twelve counts bound over in Bidegary case

Twelve counts against Seth Thomas Bidegary of sexual assault with a child under 14 years of age were bound over to Sixth Judicial District Court Department One at a preliminary hearing in justice court Tuesday.
