Forest Service searching for RAC members

Also looking for RAC project proposals

The Forest Service is gearing up for filling the gaps in their Resource Advisory Council (RAC) and putting out the word that it's time for organizations or individuals to submit proposals for cooperative projects to benefit, directly or indirectly the forest service lands. The purpose of the forest service RAC is to consider applications for cooperative projects - the funding for the projects comes from Secure Rural Schools money Humboldt County receives as part of the state's allotment.

Pathogens threaten bighorn sheep in southern Nevada

LAS VEGAS - The Nevada Department of Wildlife has confirmed that the same strain of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, the pathogen that led to a pneumonia outbreak in the River Mountain herd of desert bighorn sheep in August 2013, has been found in bighorn sheep herds living in the Eldorado, McCullough and Spring Mountain ranges.

Secretary Jewell announces two solar projects approved in Nevada, California

WASHINGTON, D.C. - As part of President Obama's Climate Action Plan to reduce carbon pollution, create jobs and move our economy toward clean energy sources, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell today announced the approval of two solar energy projects located near the Nevada-California border that are expected to supply 550 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to power about 170,000 homes, and support more than 700 jobs through construction and operations.

Pink Ladies support hospital

Did you know that over 45 years ago, several ladies decided to join in a sidewalk sale and raise some money for the Humboldt County hospital. The items sold were donated, and they sold enough to raise $535! That money was given to the hospital to buy two chairs and a wheel chair, thus the Hospital Auxiliary was born. We are now about 100 strong. You know us as "Pink Ladies" because of the color of the smocks we wear. The few brave men who have joined us don't wear the smocks, but if you look closely, you may see pink aprons or pink ball caps.

Cooperative Extension offers landscapers free Living With Fire course March 17

RENO - University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will offer a free course for landscape professionals 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., March 17 at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino in Reno, to provide information on how landscaping design and materials play a crucial role in reducing the threat of wildfire to homes. The course is part of the Living With Fire Program, and is offered in conjunction with the International Association of Fire Chiefs Wildland-Urban Interface Conference.

Relay for Life teams plan weekend of softball, fundraising

The Loopy Leprechaun Coed Softball Tournament is scheduled for March 15-16 and organizers are hoping for a fun event that will raise money for the Relay for Life organization.

Acting district ranger leaving
