It was part of a fundraising trip he made to the United States. Two months later, in December of 1911, he became the first president of the Republic of China. I'm not aware of any translations of this speech, but if someone does find one, I'd like to see it. Not often Winnemucca hosts such a notable person, then or now!Compiled by Barbara Powell. The warmth of our community

Strangers passing through town often wonder why on earth we moved here and stayed here. By "we", I mean every one of us. Why didn't other cities and states beckon or foreign entities draw us into their realms? Part of the reason lies in the warmth and personal connections that a community such as ours offers. This was blazingly evident Friday, January 24, 2014, Winnemucca Alzheimer's Awareness Day - Tie One On. With purple ribbons and bow ties, stories and reconnections, and strengthened understanding through knowledge, we united to infuse Winnemucca with information of the signs and symptoms of this horrendous disease called Alzheimer's.

JESSICA POWELL • The Humboldt SunMayor Di An Putnam (left) proclaimed February National Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month at Tuesday's Winnemucca City Council meeting. Stephanie Johnson, with Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services, was there to accept the proclamation. WDVS has always been active in making sure that women and teens are safe, Putnam said. "I urge all Winnemucca residents to work toward ending teen dating violence and empowering young people to develop healthier relationships," she said. Johnson said WDVS will be working with the junior high and high school this month to raise awareness for teen dating violence.

Record rainfall over the weekend

Winnemucca broke a record for rainfall Sunday with total precipitation of .69 inches; the previous record for that date was for .49 inches in 2007, according to the National Weather Service Elko office.

No evidence of credible threat at high school last week, Jensen says

Administrators at Lowry High School received a report from a student Thursday that another student was in possession of a box of bullets on campus. After investigating the claim, it was determined that the item in question was actually a box of magic cards, Superintendent Dave Jensen said Friday.

Winnemucca resident Gerald Hughes said high blood pressure and chest pain led to a stress test. The results landed him at Renown hospital in Reno where he had open heart surgery to replace five blocked coronary arteries - a quintuple bypass.

JESSICA POWELL • The Humboldt SunGround work has begun at the site for the new city fire station. Construction is expected to begin in March. The new station, a nearly $1.7 million project, will be located on East Winnemucca Boulevard behind the golf course.
