An African spurred tortoise, native to the Sahara region of Africa, wandered into Grass Valley resident Penny Gean Beck's yard on Saturday morning and headed through her garage. Beck, right, said the young tortoise was making a beeline for the field across the street from her house. She said that the tortoise was somewhere around 7-10 pounds and didn't seem afraid of her at all; in fact, when she picked the tortoise up and rubbed his belly, he stuck his neck out and seemed to enjoy it. Beck said that she had her husband carry the tortoise to his desired destination, because she didn't want it to get run over by a car, and he took off toward the mountains headed east.

The city, Lions Club and Silver State International Rodeo all held family fun events. The city budgeted $15,000 for this year's fireworks show. The fireworks were launched from the golf course.
WINNEMUCCA - Driving the 2.5 hours to Reno or five hours to Salt Lake City for a specialist visit that may last 10 minutes is a common, sometimes frustrating, always expensive experience for Humboldt County residents.
Winnemucca residents saw some wild weather on the afternoon of July 4th. It was nice enough for the parade and events at Vesco Park, but then afternoon thunderstorms blew through with wind, hail and torrential rain. The wild weather didn't last long but left some damage in its wake. Above, trees were toppled at the Hobson residence at Thomas Canyon and Allen roads by winds in excess of 50 miles per hour. The National Weather Service reported a peak gust of 66 mph. The NWS also reported .25 inches of rain fell.MICHAEL MICHAELSEN Special to the Sun
