Junior high students prepare for the future

Winnemucca Junior High teacher Larry Renteria brought real-life career and interview preparation into his classroom Tuesday through the Northern Nevada STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Project, which is supported by the Northern Nevada Professional Development Program (NNRPDP). Renteria said that he has always had his students write covers letter, resumes, and complete applications in the past, but the support of NNRPDP and the STEM Project has "catapulted the idea to a new level for these students." The culminating year-end activity for Renteria's students was to "apply" for a real job via an online job site and write cover letters, resumes, and fill out applications. These were then reviewed by two community members: Nene Kirlay, former administrator with the Oakland Police Department and inventory control specialist at Boot Barn, and Terri Otto, former manager of Boot Barn and Vault Denim manager and manager trainer. Several students were then selected for real-life interviews, while the rest of Renteria's students interviewed in small groups with peers.Courtesy photos

Winnemucca's water taxi circa 1910 -

WINNEMUCCA - This wasn't a Sunday boating excursion even though the young men are nicely dressed. The two men in the front of the boat had created a business out of adversity. Lee Case, one partner, in front manning the oars, and Vic Giroux, the other in back, ready to step in when Lee wore out from the constant rowing. They provided a necessary service. The only crossing that linked both sides of town, Winnemucca's bridge, had washed out in 1910. They rowed people back and forth for a fee and had steady trade until the bridge was rebuilt. Hard to imagine the necessity for a water taxi in Winnemucca, but here's the proof!- Compiled by Barbara Powellnevadasdesertlegends.com.
